About this deal

Mid-range performance is strong. The guitar strums that begin of Paris, Texas are piercing and resonant, setting a confident tone for the rest of the film. If you’re after a soundbase that both looks good and performs brilliantly, this Canton DM55 is definitely one you need to audition. One of the nicest features of the previous series was the solid remote control that came with it – rather than the cheap ‘credit card’ style remotes that often gets tossed in with less premium products. Canton have provided a wand of their own creation that’s solid and responsive to use and adds to the high-end feel of these products. For more information about any of our products or to arrange a demonstration please pop into your local store today or call our telesales team on 0333 900 0093. Treble and bass EQ controls are there for the tweaking, but I couldn’t achieve a happy balance that was better than them in neutral. A touch more bite to the treble wouldn’t go amiss, though.

Sound modes include Stereo and DTS TruSurround, plus a new Voice mode that boosts speech and a Hotel mode that sets a maximum volume limit. The DM55 will also decode two-channel Dolby Digital. On the face of it, this is obvious - under the TV, right? But: we should mention a very common ‘alternative’ scenario - the temptation of placing your soundbase within a closed-off shelf or cupboard. This may work fine in some cases, but generally speaking, soundbases require an open space to emit all the audio frequencies as intended and therefore sound their best. some of these web prices are cheaper than in-store, so please mention that you've seen these offers online) The whole thing is held together by the DM55’s excellent bass output. There’s a subwoofer pre-out if you have a spare woofer to call into action, but left on its own and the twin in-built drivers prove deep and potent, giving bass-rich moments ample scale and weight without overpowering the other speakers. The thud and hum of lightsabers in a forest clash is tight and beefy, and when the final act plays host to some truly destructive sequences this 2.1-channel soundbase has the presence to match. Prices valid in stores (all including VAT) until close of business on 25th November 2023. The Canton Digital Movie 55 is a 2.1-channel soundbar capable of delivering powerful audio output with its 200W RMS rated power. It features advanced audio decoders such as DTS TruSurround and Dolby Digital, which enhance the audio quality for an immersive viewing experience. The 6 driver DM55 is the smallest of a range of soundbases from Canton, an established and well respected German brand. The 55 stands for 55cm (width). They also do a DM75 (8 drivers ) and DM100 (10 drivers) at 75cm and 100cm wide respectively with higher specs. I have two award winning options (albeit in different categories) to look at, the Sonos Playbar and the Canton DM55. There is a significant price difference between the two, so my aim is not to try and determine which sounds best. There are far better qualified people who can do that (and indeed have). I will discuss sound quality briefly, but I will be looking at the broader picture. Sonos Playbar

Your music or TV is controlled via a free app on your computer, smartphone or tablet. From the app you can choose what music you want to play in a variety of ways. Numerous streaming services such as Spotify or Deezer can be accessed as well as internet radio stations or your iTunes (or equivalent) music library. You can stream music directly from your smartphone or tablet – but really you’re better off using your device as a controller. TV is just another source you can choose from the app: Selecting TV source from Sonos app At this price most folk will be looking for a decent, convenient improvement on their TV’s sound, rather than unit that’s overly cinematic – and you certainly get that with the DM5. This device sounds solid and authoritative, and shows none of the thin, fragile sound that often emanates from your TV. An Eco mode automatically shuts the unit down if a signal isn’t detected for an hour (although it’s disabled if auto power is activated). Canton DM55 – Setup & Operation It also brings to attention the placement of sounds, with the left and right channels separated well enough to get a sense of the unfurling action. It’s a big sound, too, taller than I expected. However, the size of the soundbar means it isn’t the widest: it’s big enough to feel a medium-size room with ease. If anything, it could go louder and bigger if you want to invoke the ire of your neighbours.

Comparison

A helpful automatic on/off function fires up the unit when it detects a signal on the optical or coaxial inputs and shuts down after 30 seconds if there’s no signal. Simply turn off your TV before going to bed and the soundbase will automatically follow suit. You can place TVs weighing up to 40kg on top, provided the stand fits well within the 545mm by 300mm surface area. If you have a TV over 50in, I’d recommend stepping up to the DM75 or DM100. The Canton DM55 soundbase replaces the terrific DM50, offering some new featuresand upgraded audio. It’s the smallest of three models from the German brand, alongside the DM75 and DM100, which are both designed for bigger rooms and TVs.
