Powered by newly developed BOSS technology, this cool and convenient function is great fun when working with Roland’s free Guitar Friend Jam software, and also lets you experiment with using your guitar to create MIDI sequences in music production software. While the Boss GT-001 is not setup for synths straight out of the box, it can handle them very well once you go in and tweak the patches.

If you’re only interested in live performance, and not that fussed about having a computer around, the GT-100 is a much better choice because of the added expression pedal and more “floor-based” design. Edit - from a quick glance on YouTube I think it might well be the midi setup in Reaper that's the issue. If you want to just turn up and rock (or make pocket calculator based effects ala Kraftwerk) then something like the GT-100 is going to be more suitable. Available as a free download for Mac or Windows, BOSS TONE STUDIO gives you an intuitive graphical interface for creating and editing GT-001 effects patches from your computer via USB.The GT-001 is a really handy little effects unit, I just wish that BOSS/Roland had made the USB port class compliant as there are several devices that allow 5-pin MIDI to USB. Clean, semi and a couple of the Van Halen sorta ones…I can adjust to my liking…to me it sounds killer through my crappy little home setup and does absolutely everything I need it to do for practicing. That's not a quick tweak, but a full multi-point setup by an experienced guitar technician who will check and adjust every single thing on your guitar, bass, ukulele or banjo to ensure it is performing at its absolute best. It comes with an FX send jack as well, so it’s easy enough to connect a pedal with expression control into the chain. You can also do anything the computer GUI will let you do through the simplistic front panel controls-- a computer isn't a necessity to get everything you can from the device.
On top of that, a newly developed guitar-to-MIDI function lets you have fun with Guitar Friend Jam and other computer programs from a normal guitar input—no special pickup required! Roland just sort of assume you’re already an audio engineer (which might be fine for some people, because they likely are) and that you’re comfortable with USB audio interfaces. Thankfully a lot of the more modern units have enough grunt to process all the FX in a timely manner. I supposed it's enough to enter notes in a midi partition, but not good to record something accurate.

It’s highly likely there are other ones I didn’t personally encounter, but I can’t really speak of those. You need to tell the unit which input you’re using (the mic input and the guitar input are selected separately, and cannot be used at the same time), then configure the input levels, then configure the USB output level, and set it up as a recording device on your PC or Mac, and… yeah this is gonna take a while. Case in point: the BOSS GT-001 supplies two recording devices to a Windows 10 PC via the same USB cable: PRIMARY, and SECONDARY. But todays 64 bit Windows PCs are gaining clock speed, and better response to interrupts and Audio / MIDI hardware .Hi Jim, I bought the GT-001 to put on my pedalboard as it has a great number of effects in a tiny package. while others help us to improve your experience by providing insights into how the site is being used.
