About this deal

Some designs allow for both options, which works well if you’re switching from home-use to the campsite. It’s usual for a PVC air bed to stretch a little, and the air inside contracts at night as the temperature drops, but this normally settles after the first few uses.

There is a black bung in the opposite end which I hadn’t spotted and it wasn’t quite snapped in properly so was leaking air on both. The main difference between an air mattress and an air bed is that the former is designed to be used indoors, while the latter is for outdoor use. We’d suggest going for one with an electric option, as this will make the blowing-up-process faster. Keep it sealed and do not put it in an attic, cellar or shed where it could be easily damaged and grow mouldy from the cold and damp in the winter months. Designed for use everywhere from camping trips and campervan holidays to sleepovers at grandma’s, this simple and affordable bed for little ones is fuss-free to get kids comfy. Had to open all the ventilation parts of the tent because of the plastic smell which means it’s a lot colder.

While it is similar in size to the Bestway Fortech in terms of length and width, it’s just a tad lower and so easier to clamber onto. Ease of use: We test how long it takes to inflate each bed, and how long to deflate and tidy the bed away. Upgrade your camping experience with a better night’s sleep on the Hi-Gear Deluxe Airbed with built-in foot pump and raised pillow. The bed did well to stand up to the kids jumping on it, however, and I found the large built-in pillow very comfortable. Its easy-to-use foot pump means it takes just a few minutes to put up and it stays inflated thanks to the strong and durable PVC material with welded seams. For a start, the built-in pumps and plugs aren’t waterproof, and unless it can be inflated with a standalone pump, you’ll also need access to a mains socket or compatible power pack to inflate and deflate the air bed. My tester friend Tina also pointed out that she liked the feel of ‘wave beam’ structure on the top, as it made her feel secure.

Most designs (but not all) come with a puncture repair patch, should you have any mishaps when using your air bed. After sleeping on the raised air beds in this test, it took me a while to get used to sleeping on the Air Seconds, which at 18cm is noticeably different in height compared to the Bestway’s lofty 46cm.The instructions in the box are basic, but advise that you shouldn’t inflate or deflate for longer than five minutes.

In the morning, we note which beds have stayed firm and which ones are noticeably spongier than the night before. It also sounds like some didnt check the bungs were in securely so perhaps why they gave low reviews. We found that the raised air beds in our test didn’t have any specific thermal insulating properties. While it was a little trickier to get in and out of, the bed makes for a surprisingly comfortable and warm sleep, and has a nice pressure-relieving squish to it.
