About this deal

There is a power discrepancy when racing. Erg mode is fine regardless of gearing but a difference in power readings arises in free ride on zwift especially when I start pushing the watts in races. I just use my power pedals for power now and I am fine. In the case of simulation (aka slope) mode, the Tacx Neo 2 can simulate from 0% to 25% incline – which is the highest out there. In real life when you descend there's inertia involved. It's a complicated dance that simulation software tries to replicate but the Tacx Neo 2T uses its direct connection to the freehub to accelerate the freehub during descending. In use, it's very subtle but it's a feature that no one else has at this price range. Matching it on the Wahoo side will require stepping up another level to the Wahoo bike. Unlike most other trainers on the market (virtually all of them), there’s no calibration required – or even offered, for the Neo series. While it was initially a concern of mine with the Neo 1 (would it stay accurate?) – that’s proven unfounded over time. Cadence measurement seemed accurate too although while it worked faultlessly with both of the road bikes I used on the Neo 2T, it might not work with short crank arms, as I found out with my mountain bike. This is because the cadence sensor is housed in the body of the trainer, which the crank arm passes. Short cranks don't reach the sensor and therefore don't create a reading.

The app also allows you to test out the road file and ISOKINETIC/ISOTONIC options. I dig into road feel a bit later on. You can see below in the two side by side shows a handful of the many different road feel modes.

New microcontroller and additional memory: This will improve ERG control Tacx says, and reduce vibrations The ability to function without a cable means you can set up in a garage, shed or out on the balcony without having to trail an extension lead across your lawn. It also means you could take the trainer to a race or sportive to do warm-ups beforehand. The NEO 2T's resistance unit isn't exactly the same as the NEO 2, but it's a similar beast, and it has the same characteristics. Those characteristics are: it's very good at giving repeatable numbers that you can trust to be pretty close to what you're actually putting out, and generally it reads at the lower end of what I'd expect from my legs, given a few years of trying all sorts of trainers and power meters.

The NEO 2 was already equipped with a capacitive left and right detection sensor that accurately measures the exact position of both your legs. By adding standard ANT+ Cycling dynamics, you can now analyse your pedal stroke via the software of third parties; for example on a Garmin Edge bike computer.Via a capacitive sensor on the left and right side, the NEO 2 detects the exact position of the legs while pedaling. In combination with the power meter, an exact analysis of the power distribution can be made. With this data, you can specifically optimize your pedaling and compensate for any imbalances. Now, there’s not a ton of training benefit here, per se. But that’s true of many things we do on trainers indoors. If it was all about training benefit we’d just be riding in ERG mode every day on perfectly structured workouts. Instead, we have a wide variety of apps that by and large are designed to keep us entertained. And this feature simply adds to that entertainment factor. If this weight isn’t set (or is set for another person in your family), then Zwift or such will ‘feel’ incorrect. The road-like feel won’t be right. Note that when connected over ANT+ FE-C, Zwift will properly transmit the weight to the trainer. But this will not occur over Bluetooth Smart. In other words, if you have a heavier rider and a smaller rider in your household, be sure to either use ANT+ FE-C in Zwift, or use the app to change the weight before each ride.

Because the Neo 2 SE doesn't use a flywheel or an internal gearbox, it's arguably the quietest trainer on the market. Thus, training is possible at any time and in any place. The NEO 2 Smart has been equipped with an high-quality chipset that enables smoother and more responsive control of the NEO motor. This leads to a quieter indoor cycling experience and paves the way for new and immersive features. With the new pedal stroke analysis function, power distribution and driving performance can be improved. A capacitive left and right detection sensor has been added to allow the bike trainer to measure the exact position of both legs. The familiar features of the NEO Smart are still available. Like Road Feel, with which you can experience the vibrating feeling of driving on cobblestones, gravel and many other road surfaces (in Tacx Films and Zwift). And this exciting feeling of accelerating into a descent after reaching the top of a mountain is simulated with the Descent simulation. Like the NEO, it is equipped with dynamic inertia. In contrast to the mass inertia of a flywheel, the dynamic inertia compensates for weight, speed and angle of inclination, significantly improving the riding experience. With the isoconical and isotonic training modes, you train with a fixed force or speed to improve your pedal stroke. These modes are available for free in the Tacx Utility App.

Next the NEO 2 has downhill drive simulation, which means that as you go downhill the trainer will forward spin the rear ‘wheel’ (cassette and flywheel since there is no wheel). This means that the trainer will simulate the inertia of going downhill. This is yet another little touch that makes things feel more realistic than they are. It started with a brand new unit produced in 2019 (based on serial number). It worked fine in Zwift erg mode while being in the small chainring. Thanks to its powerful motor brake, the NEO 2 SE can brake up to 2200 watts of power at 40 km/h and simulate up to 25% incline. This makes it ideal for even the most intense forms of training, and the rider is the only limiting element.
