[5] He adds that while it is plainly a celebration of Italy, "At a more profound level, it's a beautifully philanthropic yet unsentimental work. However miserable the times and awkward the place, Newby's characters are usually endearing, and often complex." Newby tells his story with a charming, self-deprecating humor that emphasizes how inept he was at the time, how unprepared he was for the rigors of life as a fugitive. The worst that would befall him if recaptured, however, was a return to some POW camp. His constant concern was for the welfare of the many selfless Italians who risked their very lives to help him remain free. He had a close call once when he woke from a snooze in the sun on a remote hillside to find a German officer standing over him. As it happened, this man was no rabid Nazi, but an enthusiastic butterfly hunter who had, he said, “no intention of spoiling such a splendid day either for you or for myself.” Before he can decide what to do, the German sits down next to him, and tells him that he thinks he is English. ‘You must be a prisoner-of-war. Love and War in the Apennines’ is Newby's tribute to the selfless and courageous people who were to be his saviours and companions during this troubled time and of their bleak and unchanging way of life. Of the cast of idiosyncratic characters, most notable was the beautiful local girl on a bike who would teach him the language, and eventually help him escape; two years later they were married and would spend the rest of their lives as co-adventurers. Part travelogue, part escape story and part romance, this is a mesmerising account of wisdom, courage, humour and adventure, and tells the story of the early life of a man who would become one of Britain's best-loved literary adventurers. It is the story of a WWII British soldier, Newby, captured with his commando by the Italians and imprisoned in a former orphanage. As the Italians surrender to the Allies, the commando is freed, and attempts to flee. However, the Germans arrive and the commando is captured again. Only Newby, injured, remains at large. The rest of the film recounts how he is hidden and protected by the Partisans, and his survival. That night something happened to me on the mountain. The weight of the rice coupled with the awful cough which I had to try and repress broke something in me. It was not physical; it was simply that part of my spirit went out of me, and in the whole of my life since that night it has never been the same again. She and her father assist in his escape, give him a change of clothes, and then take him to the first of a number of peasant dwellings in the Apennines, in which he is allowed to hide.

I first read this book 20 years ago, and I knew I would want to read it again. Having just done so, I can say that it was every bit as good the second time around as it was the first. Author Finds Italy Between 'Love And War' ". National Public Radio (NPR) . Retrieved 28 May 2013. It is his use of that mild adjective ‘unpleasant’ that is so characteristic of Newby’s writing, and lies at the heart of its quiet charm: more self-serving authors would have tried to boost their derring-do by turning up the volume.

If you're talking about a wonderful true love story, that's fine... except Wanda is Slovenian, not Italian - get it right people, else never repeat your confusion to a Slovenian. :) Even readers of the book seem to skim over this fact:Emmerdale's Eric Pollard reveals he is diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in heartbreaking scenes as he bravely confides in Mandy Dingle In August 1942, Newby had been captured by the Germans after a failed bombing raid in Sicily. At one point, he was obliged to walk across a possible minefield, which he describes as ‘a disagreeable sensation’. It isn't about him being a hero, he tells the tale with humour, honesty and empathy. It's fascinating as a sortof alternative narrative to what you think of in war - rather than it being us and them, he's being sheltered and looked after by the locals in a recently fascist country which is occupied by the Nazis. There isn't a lot of grandstanding by anyone and the reasons for them doing it are often explored and are fairly varied.
