Annie Kagan isn’t a medium, but she has communicated with the dead: her deceased brother, Billy. In The Afterlife of Billy Fingers , Annie shares the true story of how her brother started speaking with her, weeks after his untimely death. If you have learned and practiced unconditional love, you have mastered the greatest lesson of all. (11) Gradually, and not without trepidation, the awareness came to me that I had gone too far and that I now had to accept the consequences of my own choices. I tried to fight sleep during that night, having a vague, inner-knowledge that "it" would happen, but not knowing what "it" would mean. And the moment I let go I had probably the most painful, most agonizing experience any human being has ever lived through. I literally experienced the thousand deaths of my thousand patients. It was a total physical, spiritual, emotional, and intellectual agony causing the inability to breath, a doubling up of my body, an agonizing physical pain and a total knowledge and awareness that I was out of reach of any human being. And I had to somehow make it through that night. 66 In this article, we’ll offer our top 15 favorite books to help you understand life after death. Life After Life: The Investigation of a Phenomenon - Survival of Bodily Death by Raymond A. Moody, Jr. Deepal Chopra is basically "Pop Eastern Mysticism". This isn't some ancient text from Buddhists who lived thousands of years ago, but as a newbie to world religions, it helped me grasp the concepts of Eastern philosophies like Vedanta. I don't know much about reincarnation, universal consciousness, or astral planes, so this book helped give a brief overview of the many thoughts on the subjects.

There's no agreed evidence that life does continue after death. But for religious people, it's a comfort to believe that this isn't all there is, that there is an afterlife to look forward to, and that we'll see friends and family again. Many of us want to learn all we can about what happens to us when we die. Facts about the finality of death, near-death experiences (NDEs), and the afterlife fascinate us. Yet, we have many more questions about life after death that some of us dare to admit. Trying to separate fact from fiction—the things that we want to accept as true and those we hope exist—make up a fascinating aspect of how society views life after death. Jump ahead to these sections: Scientists stress that science is continually challenged, honest, and that nothing's ever accepted on pure blind faith. They triple tests until their hypotheses are either proved or disproved. So, either their experimentation ultimately fails, or it yields an expected result. Unlike spiritual teachings that rely on the works of distant authors who lived long ago. 11. Theologians want you to believe You might find one or more of the books above helpful in your death-acceptance process, or with grieving the loss of a loved one. If you do, it can be useful to share the book with a friend or family member and share your ideas about life after death. Scientists have argued that near-death experiences are impossible, and Dr. Eben Alexander was among the skeptics. As a skilled neurosurgeon, Dr. Alexander understood that NDEs felt real; but he theorized that they were merely hallucinations induced by extreme stress.Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, M.D. was a Swiss-born psychiatrist, a pioneer in near-death studies and the author of the groundbreaking book On Death and Dying (1969), where she first discussed what is now known as the Kübler-Ross model. In this work she proposed the now famous Five Stages of Grief as a pattern of adjustment. These five stages of grief are denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. In general, individuals experience most of these stages, though in no defined sequence, after being faced with the reality of their impending death. The five stages have since been adopted by many as applying to the survivors of a loved one’s death, as well. I used to think that reincarnation was one of the dumbest ideas anyone has come up with. After a little reading and contemplation, however, it's not as strange as I used to think. I mean my evangelical Christian beliefs proclaim a resurrection of the body. That's on par with outlandish claims of reincarnation. Chopra's style is straightforward, and although he sounds fairly convinced that he knows what's what with our souls, he does throw in a suitable amount of shoulder-shrugging at the mysteries of the universe. I finished the book feeling slightly consoled but really wishing I had taken physics my senior year of high school.

And though I have mad respect for her, I found some of the stories too odd and unrelatable - primarily regarding "out of body" experiences (including her own) and I guess her own near-death experience? I think that is what she described...? Again, the language was way too out there for me to take seriously and though she implores us to keep an open mind and not be cynical or overly critical, I guess I am not there yet. When someone explains leaving their physical body at the speed of light and traveling around, and then later experiencing the pain of a thousands deaths from a thousand dying patients - well, I just can't. I don't believe it and even if I am able to better tap into whatever spirituality may exist within me, I highly doubt I ever will. To me, that's magic (and maybe shrooms?) - not spirituality. As most books on death, it's a book about life; letting go and accepting other's in their own journies and encouraging you to focus on your own. The research presented is undeniable and, for me, rang so true to my own instincts and sense of what life and death means. Fourteen-year-old Susie Salmon is already in the afterlife when we first meet her. She mysteriously disappeared in 1973, and her story hasn’t yet come to light. His writing style isn't the best. Paragraphs and chapters aren't real clear cut or well thought-out.Ross says, ‘It’s a blessing to be able to sit at the bedside of a dying person.” Personally, I’m no amateur at this as I’ve been to my share of beloved bedsides, including, recently, my own husband’s. I’m not sure if the blessing is for the one leaving our world because the only blessing I felt was that he was no longer suffering, but the aftermath of me and my loss certainly doesn’t feel like a blessing. Most Muslims believe that we have just one life on earth and at some point in the future there'll be a judgment day when everyone will stand before God. Good people will go to paradise, or Jannah in Arabic, to be rewarded and bad people will go to hell, or Jahannam, to be punished.

At least for an instance I thought I’m going to die, drowning in a dark sunken cave. It felt like a timeless moment, it was 1000 years long and a millisecond at the same time.. I tried to use my nails, to hold into the floor to avoid falling into the hole, but that didn’t work. And of course, I’m not gonna say what happened after that :P Whether you believe in life after death, near-death experiences, and the afterlife or not, the books above are exciting and rewarding reads. When you read about life after death, you learn more about yourself and how you perceive death. While death is inevitable for all of us, the way we think about death is deeply individual and personal. Your unique concept of an afterlife is just one of the things that make your experience of death special. At just under four years old, Colton describes how he left his body during surgery. Susie relates the tragic event of her death in the intelligent voice of a teenage girl, speaking from a strange location that’s much like a school playground. But... three of the four essays she mentioned had "true stories" she related about children, death and dying. Three of the stories, all different stories, featured a girl named "Susy." I was puzzled by the second reference and rolled my eyes by the third. Is she just lumping all kids together and using a collective "girl name" of Susy for all of them? Or are the stories completely made up and that was the first name she thought of?Dr. Michael Newton is a hypnotherapist who has developed a technique for extracting patients’ hidden memories of the afterlife. His narrative, Journey of Souls , reads like a series of travel logs from 29 of those patients. Actually - I just remembered - one of the ideas in this book is that you create your own 'afterlife' based on what you believe and act on in 'this life' - so maybe it's actually really, really important to be careful what I believe right now. We are told that when the person is passing on their guardian angels, guides and past love ones are greeting them to help with the transition. Dr. Ross said these events have been verified by her as a scientist. “There will always be someone there to guide the leaving soul to transcend.” The second half of the book read like a medical students introduction to neurology. It was mind numbing. I tried to tough it out but had to just give it up when I was 80% complete. I did not feel the last 20% was worth my time. Unfinished Business offers a unique perspective on learning about the afterlife: the viewpoint of those who have already crossed over.
