About this deal

As the reader gets to know more about modern-day Cleo, we are also taken back twenty-five years to when Cleo was a university student. Things really start to fall apart, though, when someone tries to frame her murder – in the same ways as the crimes she makes up. I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Headline via NetGalley and this review is my own unbiased opinion. There’s a lot of character build up and scene setting at the start so it did take me a while to understand where the story was going, but I found Cleo such an original and intriguing character that I was absolutely hooked by her story.

It must have been difficult to make the transition from 'chick lit' to thriller but the gorgeous Ms Koomson did it with style! You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. We then go further back in time to 1996 to her days as a student at Leeds University where she becomes best friends with Trina. This is the kind of mystery, though, where you want the main character to contact the police at multiple points, which she does not do, so the plot can plod along.Like the other Dorothy Koomson novels I’ve read ( The Brighton Mermaid and I Know What You’ve Done), My Other Husband is mainly set in Brighton where the author lives. I wasn't expecting to get so emotionally involved with the characters, and i have to admit that the last chapter (before the epilogue) literally had me in tears. I appreciated how the theme of obsession was used throughout, but I just wanted to see more from a certain character. There was a lot of angst and emotion in the writing and you fully felt it all - sometimes I wanted to scream at Cleo and ask her what the hell she was doing. Dorothy Koomson always knows how to pull her readers into a storyline and keep you completely wrapped up in the protagonist’s lives.

We follow Cleo and Heath, and their friend Trina, through university and beyond and grow to understand Cleo and Heath’s relationship. This book was definitely a slow burn for me but when it got going with the twists and turns it really was an attention grabber and kept you hooked right until the end. If you haven’t read anything by this author already, you need to and I will shout about it until you do 😂 Another massive 5 star read for me! My Other Husband is fantastic in so many ways, it draws you into Cleo’s life, like your standing outside the window watching the drama unfold.Dorothy Koomson has always been one of my favourite authors - I have absolutely loved every single one I have read, and this one didn't disappoint. I was really excited about what I thought was being built up to, but it ended up going off on a completely different tangent to the one I was expecting. On the surface she appears to have it all until her past catches up with her and she has to dismantle the life she’s built for herself piece by piece before anyone finds out about her other husband. I certainly couldn’t predict how the story would eventually play out, anyway, and it constantly took me by surprise, so this was such a great reading experience for me overall.

We’re taken back to Cleo’s life when she first met Heath, how Trina said he was so ‘intense’ and it evolved over time that his relationship with Cleo in his mind was so magical that he had to do whatever he could to keep her in his life. I haven’t read anything by Dorothy Koomson before, but I will definitely be checking out her other books now, and I 100% this being on your 2022 must-read list. There is plenty of tension and suspenseful moments and some well thought out plot twists as it builds to a very good ending. She touches on the racism that Black people still face but without making it a major plot point or using it as some kind of lesson for the characters.

The twist didn’t make any sense and by the time it was finally revealed I had lost all interest and just wanted to get to the end as quick as possible. A clever and multi-layered dark thriller, My Other Husband is a gripping read that left me gasping in shock more than once.
