Each player takes a Dice Coaster, and places it in front of himself. Then each player takes 4 White Dice. When upgrading your Tavern/hiring staff, you may return corresponding cards to the general supply to reduce the upgrade/hiring cost. All remaining components can be returned to the box. They are not needed for the introductory game (Module 1). In the Closing Time! Phase G, all cards you've drawn and placed in your Tavern this Round will be placed in your discard pile.Each area (Equipment/Furnishing/Staff)of your Tavern, with the exception of the Host Counter, can be permanently upgraded by paying earned Doubloons. (The Host Counter is flipped over when using Module 3). For each Dishwasher in your Tavern, you may place 1 Die on any action space and treat it as if it were 1 value higher. The Die is not rotated, but placed on the space with the actual value rolled. This insert is compatible with The Taverns of Tiefenthal, and the Open Doors (Zimmer Frei!) expansion. The design provides both efficient storage and improved game play. Many of the trays can be utilised during the game, and they greatly aid set-up and clear-away times. The rules and boards act as a lid on top of the trays. The trays are arranged in up to two layers.

This final module has the set-up with the aforementioned three modules. This time, have each player flip over the tiny cutout at the bottom-middle of their Barkeeper Tile, showing a Signature icon. Whether you wanted to be Sam Malone from Cheers or Guinan serving synthahol in Ten Forward, there is something alluring about running your own gathering space of drinks and socialization. Games of The Taverns of Tiefenthal are played over 8 rounds, each of which is divided up into 7 phases (don’t worry, it’s not that complex). I appreciate that setting up the game might look intimidating. There’s a lot of bits, and Taverns of Tiefenthal comes with a bunch of add-on modules, each providing even more components! I’ll talk more about those modules in a separate blog, but for now, let’s focus on learning the base game. But that +1 Monastery move? No one I have played with has ever even lapped the Monastery board once, so the only way you might use this is if you are one space away from a free Noble.You can never earn Doubloons in this way however; the price of an upgrade can never be reduced to less than 0. A seasoned player of The Taverns of Tiefenthal will want this extra content. It is almost all great and keeps gameplay fresh. Using all of the base and expansion Modules is a chore (thanks to the involved setup steps required), but I could see heavy strategy gamers preferring this format every time they play. There are four modules that come in the Open Doors expansion and, unlike in the core game, you can mix and match any of these modules as you see fit. The four modules are:

But the core box includes four mini-expansions known as Modules that scale nicely with gamers of more advanced shades. (Kudos to North Star, because these mini-expansions are included in the core box and don’t cost extra. Why can’t more publishers just provide me with a few small options right out of the box???) Small village pubs are the hub of the community. The meeting place, the place to go and whittle away the hours and enjoy a refreshing drink or two. These pubs survive on the local community and regular guests. However, to grow your pub you need to attract new guests and convince them to part with their hard earned cash. Only with this investment will you be able to grow you pub to a level that will entice the Nobles.
