About this deal

Writing a poem is a personal thing , but there are skills to be learnt too, especially where editing your work is concerned, and our Poetry Surgeries aim to help you through this process.

The poems that were chosen were great - albeit not all of them, but that is usually the case for me with anthologies. Dressed in a white coat and stethoscope, Alma says she was invited to appear as the Emergency Poet at “schools, hospitals and festivals all over the place, but I’m a middle-aged woman and I’m getting a bit old for driving around”. In the introduction to his new book The Poetry Pharmacy, William Sieghart quotes the British playwright Alan Bennett. We’re keen to help people use poetry to aid with ailments of the heart, mind and soul in their personal and professional lives. William, founder of both the Forward Prizes for Poetry and National Poetry Day, began prescribing poetry by accident.I think this is a good book to start with if you are fairly new to poetry, or, it could make a rather good present for an individual needing some thoughtful words. Seeing the difference the right poem can make written on that many faces has given me confidence in poetry’s power to change lives. Through his expert curation and insightful commentary, he reminds us of the power of words to help us heal, to reconnect us with the world and to recover what has been lost. In the book’s introduction, Sieghart reveals what first drew him to poetry: “I was eight years old when I was first sent to boarding school, and I was desperately unhappy. This book, this project, is therefore a compilation of the prescriptions that work, for 56 of the problems that really matter.

The Poetry Habit course is collaborative, and we would love it if you played an active role in group tasks and sharing sessions! Sieghart founded Forward Publishing in 1986, with Neil Mendoza, and turned it into one of the largest publishing agencies in the world. Poems of the Decade brings together more than one hundred poems from the many thousands submitted to the Forward Prizes for Poetry in the first decade of the 21st century. We’ll learn how to adopt a beginner’s mindset, discover new voices, broaden our tastes, and experiment with different ways of reading a poem. It speaks directly to the reader, depicting them as a traveller who by the final lines can be found “catching this/one truth by surprise/that there is everything to look forward to”.In fact, it may be in part because they are with us for such a brief time that they manage to move us as they do. A premature death feels entirely different to the loss of a person who has had their time and used it well.
