Candidates have to play a short piece of music which they have not previously seen, and then they have 30 seconds to look through and try out any parts, after the 30 seconds the assessment will begin. It is composed of either four or six bars and will be in keys that the candidate is familiar with. Candidates have 30 seconds to look at and try out the music before starting to play for assessment. This is one of my long-time favorites from the “invention” category (List C). Not only is the imitation a challenge, it’s got lots of expressiveness and a hefty dose of mysteriousness.Need some more help for the big exam? Take it for granted from the beginning that everything is possible on the piano, even when it seems impossible to you, or really is so. Familiarise yourself with the different elements of the exam. And speak to your child’s piano tutor about their progress. You’ll then understand which sections require extra practice at home. Grade 1 Piano pieces are suitable for candidates who have been playing the piano for a period between 6 months and 1 year, and can easily master the debut level pieces. Little and often is a good approach to piano practice, especially when your child is at Grade 1 level. Encourage your child to play for 10 to 15 minutes every day.
The assessments do get more expensive as candidates progress through the grades, as the examinations become more complex and take longer. This is good to learn if you're into harmony and/or songwriting, or just want to understand your pieces better. The whole Connections book is great, and Merry-Go-Round is one of my favorite tunes of the whole grade. It sounds classy and fancy, but requires intelligent pedaling and good expression. In the aural test, the examiner will play a short passage of music. Candidates will be asked to do the following four things:
Bach's Chorales are beautiful, and make for good harmony studies. 4-part vocals are adapted to piano in this piece. Don’t be worried about your singing voice! Only pitch is assessed not vocal quality. The examiner will be happy to adapt to the vocal range of the candidate, you can potentially hum or whistle or sing at a different octave if needed! This is one of the easiest Baroque/Classical pieces that still sounds good – it’s a great grade 1 starter piece.
Aural tests: the candidate listens to the examiner play a passage of music on the piano and then answers questions about it.When your child goes into their first piano exam, they’re likely to feel nervous. Nervous fingers make mistakes. So don’t put too much pressure on them. Encouraging them to try their best will be the best help of all.
