About this deal

There is a cameo role in the training session for a permanently fuming Mel Sterland, whose near-400 appearances for Sheffield Wednesday qualified him perfectly as a convincing captain for their cross-city rivals. While the fictional Jimmy gathers himself and his senses to slam home the script-completing winner, thus neatly mending all his personal relationships in the process, the very real Sean Bean wasn’t quite as calm at the time. England Under-21 (4-2-2-2): Trafford 7; Garner 7, Harwood-Bellis 8, Colwill 8, Aarons 7; Gomes 7 (Archer 73), Jones 7; Palmer 7 (Elliot 82), Smith-Rowe 5 (Madueke 66); Gibbs-White 7 (Skipp 73), Gordon 7 (Doyle 82) Mel was born in October 1961 on Sheffield Manor Estate, he was brought up with a large family who worked to make ends meet.

Gary Mac is an absolutely fantastic guy and he and Steven Gerrard have done a superb job at Rangers. I think they’ll win the league again this year. I know Celtic will be at them and they’ve brought a few players in but Rangers have got good balance now, they’ve got exciting players and I think Gerrard and Gary Mac won’t let it slip.” Spain Under-21 (4-2-3-1): Tenas 8; V Gomez 5 (Barrenetxea 73), Paredes 7, Pacheco 6, Miranda 6; Blanco 6 (Camello 82), Baena 6 (Oroz 59); Rodri 6 (Riquelme 59), Sancet 5 (Veiga 59), S Gomez 6, Ruiz 5 Perhaps as a tidy cashing-in on the pre-Euro ‘96 fever, Sean Bean was rather easily persuaded to take on the role of Jimmy Muir (invariably a “Jimmy”, these types), a hard-drinking, family-loving Sunday League footballer who gave up hopes of a professional career to work in the local brewery. With the Highlander himself, Christopher Lambert, among the producers, this was already destined to be a high-class affair. This is the second of a series of four themed programmes made by Yorkshire Television that aired in 1987 about life on the Manor Estate of council housing in Sheffield, consisting of events on the Estate and interviews with, mostly unidentified, residents. This one focuses on residents who have been made redundant and who are trying to move on. It shows four unemployed steelworkers trying to renovate a tool making workshop, Mal Middleton, who has written a script, ‘Bird Fancier’, produced by the BBC, unemployed workers who are scavenging the derelict houses, and Sheffield Wednesday footballer Mel Sterland. It was first transmitted on 10th August, 1987.

His time at Ibrox would be brought to an abrupt end however when Souness decided to cut his losses and sell Sterland to Leeds United. It was a bit of a joke really. I lost a lot of money up there as well regarding the contract and obviously the house that we had to sell but he could’ve been honest with me and told me he was going to sell me and not to go ahead and buy a house. He was just so good and he used to eff and blind. He was a funny man, he used to get our names wrong all the time but it didn’t matter what our names were. We had to get on with it, when he told you to do something, you did it! Athletic Bilbao are playing in the 2020-21 Copa Del Rey final against Barcelona on 17 April, two weeks after they play Real Sociedad in the rescheduled 2019-20 Copa Del Rey final,” writes Darren Jalland. “If they win the first and lose the second would that be the shortest time a team has ever held a trophy for (not counting teams stripped of a trophy, like Swindon’s play-off win in 1990)?”

As the book is called 'Boozing, Betting and Brawling' Andy couldn't let him go without asking him about two of his weaknesses... Mel’s career started at Sheffield Wednesday and he went onto play for Leeds United for four years and then went to Glasgow Rangers for a short period. He also played for his country, England in his career. The football choreography is refreshingly unspectacular – there are no impractical flying volleys here – and that works to the film’s credit. Bean himself recognises the problems directors have always faced with trying to depict the game on the big screen: There is more archive film of the Sheffield steelworkers, and it is noted that now there is 35% unemployment on the Manor. Resident Tom Ismay, now unemployed, tells about how he has always been a hard grafter. Another resident, Betty Houlden, is interviewed, explaining how her recently deceased husband, who died within 48 hours of retiring, only got a small token after 34 years of working for his firm.

Neo-noir vibes from Arjan De Zeeuw. Photograph: Richard Saker/The Observer Top of the league and relegated Fast forward to the present day and Sterland says he’s been impressed with the team assembled by his former Whites teammate and Steven Gerrard. Running out at Ibrox with a full house was absolutely magnificent and it was a pleasure to play for them. I couldn’t believe it when the ball came to me, to be honest, but it was nice to score on my debut.

In collaboration with Opta, we are including advanced analytical data such as xG, xA, progressive passing, duels and more for over twenty competitions. For more information on the expected goals model and which competitions have advanced data, see our xG explainer. Jimmy handles the step up quite comfortably, slamming home the winner on his debut, fulfils the contractually-obliged Sean Bean Arse Shot in the bath afterwards, and then headbutts his jealous captain after Ken wangles Jimmy a trial at First Division Sheffield United.

Betty Houlden ‘made it her mission’ to help people on Sheffield’s Manor estate

An elbow in the face from one rather ancient-looking defender is enough to convince Jimmy’s No.1 fan Mel Sterland that this heavily concussed Sunday League footballer should take the crucial penalty to put them into the FA Cup final. Someone’s had a word – maybe the director. Despite being played out of position, Sterland hit the ground running with a goal on his debut against Hamilton Accies although he jokes he never quite nailed his celebration. That chance comes in the Cup semi-final against Manchester United, no less, but any football pedants still watching might want to prepare themselves. IMDB, normally rather matter-of-fact, actually sounds rather impatient with the whole thing by this point: I was surprised that you omitted Sir Stanley Rous from your list of match officials who were honoured,” peeps Martyn Wilson. “Rous was a ref between 1927 and 1934 (I think he was the first referee to use the system of having each assistant referee running only half of the line), after which he re-wrote the rules of the game as secretary of the FA. Less laudably, he was a supporter of apartheid-era South Africa. He got the CBE in 1943, and was knighted in 1949.” Knowledge archive As already explained, the FA Cup Semi-Final should be played at a neutral venue and not at the home ground of Sheffield United – as in the film. However, there is also the alarming fact that the April semi-final takes place in mid-winter. This is due to the footage from the ‘real game’ actually being an FA Cup 3rd tie in January, 1995.”
