According to MGM's original press release, the Elvis On Tour film 'offers the first intimate look at the enigmatic country boy who became the world's most celebrated musician'. The recording of "An American Trilogy" from Disc 1 - Hampton Roads, Virginia has been previously released with film scoring overdubs on the soundtrack to the 1981 film "This Is Elvis. The movie’s 50th anniversary was in November 2022 and again SONY / RCA still did not make the hoped for release date, instead the new box-set being finally released in late January 2023.

The ‘oldies but goodies’ are fairly standard crowd-pleasing performances, however the inclusion of ‘Are You Lonesome Tonight’ is a delightful addition. As an official soundtrack album for Elvis On Tour was never issued at the time of the movie's original release, the upcoming box fills in a major gap in the Presley discography. The Elvis On Tour box set has been produced by Ernest Mikael Jorgensen and includes new liner notes by Presley's longtime friend Jerry Schilling as well as an essay from Warren Zanes of The Del Fuegos.I found it odd that Elvis seemed to ignore his own recent single releases from that era yet he included hit songs from other artists in his concert setlists. It is a real positive that these “On Tour” concerts don’t have the TCB Band rush of the MSG concerts nor the slight sterility-of-perfection required from them for the ‘Aloha’ recording.The TCB Band are playing tight as ever, while the loose southern-funk interaction from both the musicians and backing-vocalists add something really special.
