In 7:2, God tells Noah to take seven of ‘every clean beast’, ‘and of beats that are not clean by two, the male and the female’. It also attempts to explain how the Ark could house all living animal types: "... Buteo and Kircher have proved geometrically, that, taking the common cubit as a foot and a half, the ark was abundantly sufficient for all the animals supposed to be lodged in it ... the number of species of animals will be found much less than is generally imagined, not amounting to a hundred species of quadrupeds." [53] It also endorses a supernatural explanation for the flood, stating that "many attempts have been made to account for the deluge by means of natural causes: but these attempts have only tended to discredit philosophy, and to render their authors ridiculous". Genesis was composed of both oral traditions and “updated” material over many centuries. The scholarly consensus is that the first five books of the Scriptures were first written down c. 600 BCE, with the final editing completed during the period of “the Exile” in Babylon/ Persia in the fifth century BCE. Like many other stories in Genesis, there is often two and sometimes three versions of the same story. The flood was increasing for forty days. The waters rose so high, that the tops of the highest mountains were overflowed more than twenty feet. There is no place on earth so high as to set men out of the reach of God's judgments. God's hand will find out all his enemies, ( Psalms 21:8). When the flood thus increased, Noah's ark was lifted up, and the waters which broke down everything else bore up the ark. That which to unbelievers betokens death unto death, to the faithful betokens life unto life.
