About this deal

It's odd to me that it was this very relationship that I was annoyed by in my first, (but what was really the 7th), Orphan X book, that I now love the most. Evan is, of course, very masculine and adept at everything but I was pleased to see a number of strong female characters contributing to his mission.

Michaelides takes a literary turn in his latest novel, employing an unreliable narrator, the structure of classical drama, and a self-conscious eye to dismantling the locked-room mystery. The President of the United States has given X an ultimatum: assassinate one of the richest men in the world or lose your life. Sunday Times bestselling author of the Evan Smoak thrillers Orphan X, The Nowhere Man, Hellbent, Out of the Dark, Into the Fire, Prodigal Son, Dark Horse and The Last Orphan.

Evan is supported by many of his background characters including Joey and Candy but ultimately, it is he who must choose his future. Because the depth of the characters was really expanded here, and in a direction I loved it to go, I gave this four stars, even though the plot was a little disappointing.

Thanks Gregg Hurwitz, always excited to read a new Orphan book, and NetGalley for an advanced copy of this exciting story. Evan quickly discovers and investigates the murders of innocent people somehow involved with this elusive billionaire. Taking the threat under advisement, X must choose whether to go against his principles or tell the president to eff off and take his chances. Hurwitz has created a series that cannot be pigeonholed into a single genre and appeals to readers across a range of genres.

I always wonder what will happen next and in this one I was a little surprised, in a good way, with part of the ending. If you were to go by what you find in novels these days, the entire world is populated by super-trained assassins and spies who can take on any odds no matter how stacked against them the odds are. Capture and escape form a recurrent pattern in this eighth Orphan X caper, long on gritty action and crackerjack dialogue, as it ricochets from Europe to Beverly Hills to various points in the New York metropolitan area. Instinct drove him to peek at the RoamZone, the high-tech, high-security phone that traveled with him everywhere. Evan Smoak, alias Orphan X, is an off-the-books US government agent who was regularly sent around the world to take care of some very dirty business.
