A Comprehensive Education (comic)". Penny Arcade. January 13, 2010. Archived from the original on July 14, 2014 . Retrieved July 13, 2014. First, I didn't feel like it really went anywhere. It's like you can tell it's trying to go somewhere but it's not really doing it. Do not put this book down. I'm dead serious. Your life could depend on it. I'm risking everything by telling you -- but you need to know. If you dare to read this story, you become part of the Experiment. I know that sounds a little mysterious -- but it's all I can say right now. and places them in an overblown, nearly incomprehensible story pitched at young adults. Max (aka Maximum Ride), the 14-year-old girl from both of the aforementioned novels, leads a band of mutant orphans hiding from the sinister scientists at "the School," who grafted avian DNA onto their genes, giving them wings (plot points established in When the Wind Blows

It might be surprising, given James Patterson’s reputation as both a great author and a popular one. But even reading the book as a 9-year-old I easily identified the flaws while reading the story. The massive ones, the ones that made the story not even worth bothering to read. James Patterson (July 3, 2005). "James Patterson – Books – Maximum Ride | James Patterson Kids". Maximumrideforever.com. Archived from the original on May 21, 2018 . Retrieved May 28, 2022. The Angel Experiment is a middle-of-the-road, adventure fiction, that reads like a 1980s Uncanny X-Men comic book. I would add that it probably reads as a less sophisticated Chris Claremont title because those books were the apex of the mythology. Utterly disturbing view of the unscrupulous applications of modern science. I truly did feel my stomach lurch at some of the experimentation on children that the white coats were doing. What do we allow to happen in the name of the god of progress? The Gasman. Even typing it makes me laugh. He's just as mischievious as Iggy, always getting into trouble, the two of them. They have this cute brother relationship and I love it. It's adorable to watch them.

The stilted narration, provided by the "edgy" Maximum Ride, perhaps one of the most grating heroines in YA literature, is weakened by attempts to provide three-dimensionality to her character through her thoughtful analyses of those around her. Unfortunately, Patterson's creativity as a writer is strictly limited to half-baked and poorly described battle sequences, so Ride's introspection is relegated to heinous platitudes like, "It was like I had just lost my baby sister. And like I had lost my little girl" (p.25). (Guess what, Sister Girl... you did.) While on the sub, Gazzy, Iggy and a Navy weapons specialist come up with the plan to destroy the M-Geeks. The three of them fly and stop to find food at an abandoned vacation cottage, where they accidentally fall asleep. Max is horrified by the amount of time they’ve lost and they set out again, but as they fly over Arizona, she notices a girl being bullied by a group of boys. She tells Fang and Nudge to meet her at the northernmost point of Lake Mead and then dives down. However, while defending Ella, she gets shot in the shoulder. She wanders until she finds Ella’s house, where Ella’s mother Dr. Martinez patches up her arm and discovers her wings. Despite Max’s fears, the Martinezes seem trustworthy.Fleming, Michael (August 7, 2008). "Columbia takes 'Maximum Ride' ". Variety. Archived from the original on August 24, 2010 . As a result, they decide to go to New York to find the Institute for Higher Living, where they can find more files. Max also finds that Angel has taken a dog from the Institute. His name is Total and he looks like a totally normal dog… except for the fact that he can jump super high. Around the time that Max turned ten years old, Jeb rescued her along with Iggy, Fang, Nudge, the Gasman, and Angel. He took them to an isolated house in the mountains where they could be free to fly, learn, and interact with new parts of the world. On her eleventh birthday (an arbitrary date of her own choosing), she selected the full name Maximum Ride.

Collis, Clark (July 27, 2016). "James Patterson adaptation Maximum Ride has wings: See the exclusive trailer". Entertainment Weekly. Archived from the original on November 23, 2016 . Retrieved November 4, 2016. By the time of Maximum Ride Forever, she had matured into a prophet and leader. Her visions of the apocalypse and her inability to stop it took a great toll on her. The completed film, starring Allie Marie Evans as Maximum Ride, was released on Digital HD on August 30, 2016. In FANG, Angel has a Voice in her head like Max and Ari did. In Nevermore, Angel reveals that she is the Voice in Max's head and has been the one giving her instructions. I also love that chapters were short, and there was a cliffhanger at the end of each one. Because of that, it was very difficult to put the book down. I think I would've finish it in one sitting if life didn't get in the way.

Throughout the books, Angel becomes more disobedient and they clash often. Angel constantly makes it clear she wants to be leader, and does try to overthrow Max in Fang, although that was temporary. In Angel, Max is distraught when Angel seemingly dies in an explosion and cries in Nevermore. She is overjoyed when Angel is revealed to be alive and rescues her. The book opens up by introducing us to Max, a fourteen-year-old girl who also happens to be a human-avian hybrid. She lives in a house with her fellow hybrid friends—Fang, Iggy, Nudge, the Gasman, and Angel. They used to live at the School, where evil scientists created and experimented on them, but they escaped and have been in hiding ever since. During the apocalypse, she revealed that she was the Voice, though nobody believed her at first. She survived the Split along with Max, Fang, and Dylan, and stayed above-ground to live. Max and her daughter Hawk team up to save the City of the Dead from a plague. Hawk sees a monster in the nearby forest and she decides to tell Langford, a member of the council. Hawk goes to the forest to investigate. After some failures she finds a hidden base of hybrids. Moke and Hawk get taken captured by the Renegades. Hawk gets away. Moke still captured finds his new ability. Tensions continue to rise with Hawk in the middle. Langford captures Hawk and Calypso and they trap Langford and get out.
