About this deal

At one point Horus visibly displays his father-given ring, the mark of a long martial history stretching back around the edges of the empire to Beowulf and before. Working out the story he wanted to tell must have been the most difficult part of writing this for Dan Abnett, because we know what should be in this book and can even guess what should be in part two – the shields of Horus’ flagship are lowered, the Emperor, Dorn, Sanguinius and his Custodian Guard teleport aboard.

But that’s not all this one is, because there’s a great deal of symbolic importance to the End above and beyond it being the first half of the End itself.

The Throne room receives communication from Guilliman that he is 9 hours away from Terra immediately after the Emperor teleports out. There will be other books, from the Black Library and from Dan – this is only part one after all – and there will be other series. It feels less apocalyptic and terrifying than the masterwork that was Saturnine because it loses the key focal point to show the desperation we’re told is present.

Our shared experience amounts to an incomprehensible tangle of stories and hopes, and now, somehow, Dan Abnett has to bring it to an end. Volume two of The End and the Death is coming later this year, but as we revealed last week in an interview with Dan Abnett , there is a third volume coming – and today we can unveil the cover. That’s one hell of an achievement because while the plot summary of what was expected to be in this book is two lines long, the book itself is much, much longer and deserves (nearly) every one of those pages. Focusing in on one character pulls us up and out of a morass of tiny stories, and that’s best done with the big man himself.
