About this deal

If you are looking to undertake a loft conversion, you will need to make sure your loft is suitable for conversion. There are both structural and accessibility conditions a loft conversion must meet (such as being accessible via a permanent staircase). Additionally, a loft conversion may require planning permission depending on some factors, such as if the building is listed. Ventilation The field monitoring component of this study has found large differences in heat flux and the interior and exterior surface temperatures due to light to dark membrane color. Significant differences in the heat flux and interior and exterior surface temperatures were also found with respect to insulation strategy, which is a finding unique to this study. An apparent thermal lag is observed within the stone wool insulation and hybrid insulation assemblies compared to the polyiso insulation. This finding presents as dampened heat flux measurements, reduced cap sheet surface temperatures, and lower interior surface temperatures, primarily when the roof is heated by the sun. At night, the differences between the assemblies are very small. This thermal lag is caused by a combination of the temperature dependency of the polyiso insulation as well as the Shallow rafters - less than 75mm - limit the depth of insulation that can be accommodated, and if there happens to be a lath and plaster ceiling then forcing it into the rafter space might damage the ceiling below.

A roof can be insulated from the outside, either during the build or as a refurbishment. If refurbishing, the tiles, slates, or roofing shingles, and the battens they are attached to will all need to be removed. Then a solid base will be made from wood, which will be topped with a damp-proof membrane. Solid insulation roof boards are then added, topped by a rain-screen membrane (designed for moisture protection). Then a new set of battens and counter-battens can be attached, to which tiles, slates, or shingles can be re-laid. This is a costly process, but can have the benefits of leaving your loft roof joists visible, and not reducing your space within the loft. Other Roof Designs Consider the LABC-Registered TLX Gold. It is fully breathable, but crucially, does not need to be counterbattened - it can simply be draped over the rafters just as for a conventional breather membrane. This avoids the need to raise the roof – an ideal choice if the building is in a conservation area. Suspended timber floors are slightly different. There are differing opinions around whether to introduce a VCL or not, and where to place it. If the VCL is not installed properly, it can create more issues with condensation.Place the wool insulation in between wall studs or roof joists. This can depend on where you’re insulating. During the construction process, a damp proof membrane will be laid over a layer of sand, before insulation is placed on top, and finally the concrete is poured. If you are fitting a wet underfloor heating system, it will now be laid on top of the concrete sub floor with a thin screed layer poured over the top.

It is therefore important to control the movement of warm, moist air to stop it condensing on the cold outer surface as this can create mould and cause the rotting of structural timbers. VCLs control the amount of moisture that is able to pass through, meaning that the structure can cope with the levels of moisture. When is a Vapour Control Layer needed? Your loft roof will need to remain ventilated once you have installed insulation. This prevents the buildup of condensation, which can lead to both structural problems and health risks. However, if you install insulation you will need to leave gaps for adequate airflow to vents. Condition of Your Roof Space Cabins go by similar principles to normal buildings, though many opt to insulate them from the outside, to preserve the look of the exposed rafters. You’ll need to use a moisture-resistant sheet underneath the insulation boards. How to Insulate a Curved Roof You can use a DPM sheet as a VCL and it will do the same job as long as it is sealed correctly and placed in the correct position – on the warm side of the insulation. What’s the difference between a vapour control layer and a vapour control barrier? This was a great idea, so far as it went, but the ventilation below the floor soon began to leak through the boards, causing draughts in the room above. At that time, though, most houses were heated with coal fires, which require a lot of air for good combustion, so draughts were considered a small price to pay. State Key Laboratory of Ultra-precision Machining Technology, Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong, China Every home and business is different. With various sizes and dimensions of flat or pitched roofs, as well as budgets and bills to consider, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution.
