Food Additionally, the information in this book will just be completely inaccessible for so many. If you can't afford a diet of organic, local produce, and free range, grass fed meat and dairy, with a ton of pasture raised organic eggs, this book might just make you feel bad and not do much more. Further, a lot of the writing made me feel like my entire purpose in life is just to be a vessel to grow babies - where's the chapter on what if I want an occasional piece of cake? Instead, you are encouraged to frame everything you eat as will this grow a healthy baby?Her real-food approach to nutrition is refreshing and sound. There are no fad restrictions here, just good solid reminders of the nutrition your body needs and how to get it from the food God gave us. I absolutely loved this book! I am not pregnant yet, but since I'm starting my IVF journey next month, I thought I would get a head start in nourishing my body! In regards to collagen/gelatin, do you recommend a gelatin supplement or should a person just aim to obtain that from the bones/skin/connective tissues of properly raised meats? I have seen the Great Lakes brand but just didn’t know much about it. How much you need: 400 micrograms (mcg) a day of folate or folic acid before conception and 600 to 1,000 micrograms of folate or folic acid a day throughout pregnancy

Lily Nichols has written a must-read for any woman or health professional interested in prenatal nutrition. During my first pregnancy I felt like I spent hours upon hours trying to research all of the information that is summed up beautifully in Real Food for Pregnancy. Lily questions conventional wisdom and offers new and practical, science-based recommendations to support optimal health for both mom and baby. I hope this book will inspire change in current prenatal nutrition guidelines. Real Food for Pregnancy is the most important innovation I have seen in pregnancy healthcare in the seventeen years I have worked with expecting and new families. I am glad I read it for the information and insight provided, but I would never recommend this book to a client or friend. And although the book is extensively cited, some of the research cited is not of high enough quality to translate into clinical recommendations. Number of references doesn't matter, quality does. I think there is useful information to glean from the studies but she presents fearful messages in a matter of fact way that just isn't true.As a dietitian who specializes in women’s health, Real Food for Pregnancy will be an invaluable resource for me and my clients for years to come. Lily has bravely called out where we have gone wrong with prenatal nutrition and artfully combines modern science with traditional wisdom in a must-read for anyone who is pregnant or planning to have a baby. She managed to cover everything I’d personally want to see in an effective prenatal text from genetics, to nutrient bioavailability, to misconceptions, and much more. Ayla Barmmer, MS, RD I'm a bit torn on a point other reviewers have already mentioned, that is, Nichols often states which risk factors are increased due to various nutrient deficiencies but doesn't attach any percentage to the increase. I would love to know, as it could assauge my fears, but including this information would make it read even more like a textbook than it already does.

I recommend this book for every woman who is pregnant of thinking of becoming pregnant. Read it as early as possible. The most valuable and up to date book on nutrition. Really informed many good behaviors for my nutrition and makes me feel much better about the prenatal I selected based on her recommendations. Real Food for Pregnancy, is a comprehensive book that covers everything a woman needs to know and do, to bear healthy children, to thrive during pregnancy and to recover fast and strong after birth. Lily Nichols, did an excellent job at covering food, exercise, supplements, mindfulness, environment and other factors pertinent to a healthy pregnancy. Mihaela A. Would the dairy (and thus calcium) in the recipe hinder absorption of the iron from the liver? My iron is low so I need to be focusing on that right now.
