It's a staple of returning holiday makers who often sample it on one of the Canary Islands and want to re-live the experienceat home.

For many honey rum, known locally as Ron Miel, is the taste of Lanzarote. It’s an after drink liqueur and is often served as a freebie in small glasses (Chupitos) at the end of a meal. Our favourite for regular drinking is Artemi, but there are some boutique brands that start with the very best aged rum. You’ll find many cheap, non-DO versions here, where the ingredients are not local and some or a lot of the expensive honey is replaced by sugar. And of course, the cheaper ones start off with an average rum, rather than a quality, aged rum. Its alcoholic graduation ranges from 20 to 30%. It is of intense and sweet flavor, and its color goes from the old gold to the intense mahogany. It's mostly consumed through shots, often with a sprinkle of lime juiceHoney rum should always be served chilled, straight from the fridge, and ideally in frozen shot glasses. We like a twist of lime in it, but it’s not essential. Some restaurants pipe whipped cream on top, but that’s not our style! Ronmiel rums are made in the Canary Islands, on the island of Tenerife. It is produced by a distillery called Destileria de Tejina, established in 1948. The distillery uses sugar cane grown in the Canary Islands for production and makes the whole process itself. Cocal Honey Rum is a blend of rum of different ages and honey made on the island of Tenerife. Honey rum is sold at a very cheap price, a half-liter bottle will cost about 7€. But not all honey rums are created equal! There is a DO (Denominacion Origen) for honey rum in the EU, and any bottle bearing the DO legend must be made from both Canarian honey and Canarian rum.

We find it best to enjoy it poured neat over ice but can also be drank with cola or poured over ice cream!
