"This means you must remove the old layer of caulking. To do so, run a razor knife along both the top and bottom seal, as close as you can get to the line between the caulk and the surface." Modern caulking compounds are flexible sealing compounds used to close up gaps in buildings and other structures against water, air, dust, insects, or as a component in firestopping. In the tunnelling industry, caulking is the sealing of joints in segmental precast concrete tunnels, commonly by using concrete. Use a thin bead of caulk as over application will increase the likelihood of problems. 2. Ensure you leave you leave the caulk as long as possible to dry The terms’ decorators caulk’, and ‘sealant’ are often used interchangeably, but they are not the same. While decorator’s caulk is flexible when it dries, it isn’t as flexible as a sealant. Sealant holds up much better in damp conditions (in the bathroom and kitchen, for example) and in any areas where a lot of expansion and contraction may take place.

While caulk is an easy to use essential for any decorator, it does create a few issues. There are two main issues with caulk: Step 2: Cut the top of the caulking tube applicator with a Stanley knife at a 45 degree angle. The bigger the gap you need to fill the further down the applicator you want to cut. A bigger hole equals a bigger bead of caulk. Use your caulk gun and decorator’s caulk to fill the gap between walls and the top of the skirting. Apply a line of caulking along the area you want filled, don’t put too much in, you can always add more later on. Now using a soft mallet, hit the strip of wood down into the gap to create a air and dust tight seal. Petersen, Mark (August 28, 2021). "Expert Guide for Choosing the Right Caulk for Any Job". You’re aiming to get a bead of caulk that is just wide enough to fill the gap but not so much that there is loads of excess. The most common type of caulk is acrylic latex, for general-purpose use. Apply light pressure to push the caulk into the gap and smooth the surface. Eliminate any bumps or ridges. What you have to do is cut strips of wood ever so slightly larger than the width of the gap between each of the floorboards and the same depth and then apply some glue (wood glue or similar) to each of the insides of the boards. Due to it’s springy nature and "V" shape it will naturally spring outwards and fill the entire width of the gap and hold itself in place. It only comes in one size which makes things quite a bit simpler also. The only trimming that’s required is cutting it to length. When cutting skirting boards you will need to know the best way to join them at the corners. External corners face outwards and internal corners face inwards.
