About this deal

During her short lifetime, she published only this one novel. The violent tale was received with dismay. But its reputation grew. And grew. Into a classic. It was published 174 years ago, and still feels relevant and contemporary. The foundling Heathcliff could never cope with the fact that his twin flame Catherine married a childhood friend. A wonderful novel depicting passion and revenge spanning generations. In the genre of fun fiction, Jonasson might just be its king, and over the past decade he has written books whose primary aim has been to lift the collective spirit. His 2009 debut, The Hundred Year Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared (translated into English in 2012) about a centenarian embracing every last drop of his life, was a publishing phenomenon, selling 10 million copies. Its follow-up, Hitman Anders and the Meaning of It All, which concerned fanaticism, idealism and lots of red wine, shifted another four million. wow I loved this book I am now out recommending it to all my friends, will keep to re read even though I have banned re reads I taught my 13-year-old son how to play chess on a Monday, and by Wednesday he beat me. So I need to start improving my game.”

Jonas Jonasson certainly seem to take pleasure in writing farces, comedy of errors that happen to somehow work out. Kevin and Jenny get their revenge on the cynical, opportunist Victor – who has no redeeming character at all. I enjoyed the fact that the young couple was assisted by the owner of Sweet Sweet Revenge, Ltd. A man who, like Victor, has little redeeming qualities except that his not a fascist.

I realise the whole revenge for hire has been done before, but I thought it was a fascinating and inspired idea for a Jonas Jonasson novel. I absolutely adored the previous books by the author, so grabbed at the chance of reading Sweet Sweet Revenge Ltd. See on vana hea Jonasson: peadpööritav, tempokas, ülevaatlik ja kokkuvõtlik oma lihtsas sõnastuses, piisavalt vaimukas ja humoorikas. I have always enjoyed books by Jonas Jonasson, so I was excited about reading this new work of his. Much like his other books, Sweet Sweet Revenge, Ltd is quirky but with a heart. A bunch of lovable, bumbling characters, with seemingly nothing in common, come together for a grand story.

Cattle (cows and goats), clubs (the fighting kind) and jam. Three items which often appear in this book :-P When my father said, “The world is crap, it makes you want to cry.” I said to myself, “It doesn’t help crying. It doesn’t help laughing either, but it’s more fun.” A pleasant and poignant book, through its comical story line it touches and satirises many important themes. The plot is of course based on impossibilities, coincidences and farsical misunderstandings and doesn't stand any serious scrutinity. I liked the story and the humor but I felt that often the pace is uneven. He explained to his son that you were born, learned the art of war, got circumcised, got married, and regretted the marriage.”

Paintings by the deceased artist, Irma Stern, play a significant role in this revenge plot. I did not expect that I would not only be entertained but that this book would inform me. I had not known that Irma Stern was an actual painter of now valuable works of art. Thanks to Google, I was able to view her paintings on the internet. I was also introduced to artists whose work was destroyed mainly by Hitler's contempt towards Impressionism but was able to view a few paintings that remained. Far and away the best character for me was Ole the scenes with the shops and police in Sweden nearly killed me. It is certainly a comedy (loosely speaking) of errors from start to finish. Featuring the most (literally as there is FAR too many of them) eccentric and outrageous cast of characters -who I’m sorry, some opinions were utterly abhorrent, making it extremely hard to invest in them (Tw/ mild racism and homophobia) which even if this was their ‘personality’ or the writers intention, was nevertheless extremely uncomfortable to read.Unfortunately, I personally did not think this was as funny as the previous novels as it was slightly darker. There was still elements of sharp humour and wit mostly emanating from the sardonic characters the author has manifested within most of the main protagonists of his books. I thought this book was uproariously funny and enjoyed its laugh-out-loud moments. However, it was longer than it needed to be. An added bonus was learning about some leading artists that were unknown to me. The comedy connects some diverse characters in a surprising way. The story is set mainly in Sweden. Furthermore, having very recently read the second book of the 100 years old man, the introduction of Maasai, Kenya etc didn't have the effect it would had if I haven't read said book. On the other hand, I liked the inspiration of the author to connect his story with the history of art, painting, art auctions, Irma Stern and so on.

As with Jonasson's previous book's, it is the characters that make the narrative come alive. Hugo Hamlin, who runs Sweet Sweet Revenge Ltd., is the class act. But there are plenty of characters such as Victor, Kevin and Jenny that drive the yarn along nicely. My first book looked at the shortcomings of the whole 20th century because my ambition was to remind people of them so we would not repeat them. That book has sold 11 million copies. And the world is not a bit of a better place. To me, the best parts were by far the dialogues. My favourite ones between Ole and Hugo. Those were the bits where I laughed the most. And the scene between Victor and the American whose name I already forgot. And the fact that there are different parts in the Bible which can be interpreted and used as it fits the situation. Ernsthaft? My Thoughts: Time for something completely different. It has been a while since I read anything that amused me as much as this (in fact in may well have been The 100 Year Old Man) this book really appeals to my English sense of humour and yes I do understand that this won’t appeal to everyone.
