This way you can all eat together and before you know it, they become part of the family conversation at the table! Steven Shuman, national expert in public health and early childhood development at the National Center on Health, Behavioral Health, and Safety.
Never leave a child unattended: You should never walk away from a baby in a high chair, even if your little one is snugly strapped in and you feel the high chair is sturdy. “As with most things, it’s best if there is constant supervision,” Dr. Hoffman warns.Configurations: Newborn chair (with separate attachment), high chair, and regular chair, with several footrest positions Don’t worry, Moa’s water-repellant machine-washable inlay, dishwasher-safe tray insert and easily-wipeable seat design, makes it easy to keep clean. All parents know that when your child is trying solid food for the first time, it doesn’t always end up where it is supposed to go! Our Maxi-Cosi highchairs have easy to clean fabrics to make sure you don’t spend your quality time cleaning it. You can even wash the cover in the washing machine when it’s a really big mess! But Take Note: One tester found that their toddler can easily remove the tray and toss it to the side. But Take Note: It is pretty bulky and we found that there were hidden spots where food and liquid can easily get trapped.
But Take Note: The legs branch out a lot, making this quite wide and not as compact as some other options. We also wish the cushion was machine washable. The Stokke Tripp Trapp is an incredibly popular option for a reason: it’s super sturdy and durable, and will last for years—the weight limit is nearly 250 pounds when used as a chair, so adults can sit in it too. This makes it a great investment piece, and it features an attractive minimalist design. It is also fairly compact compared to many other options, and without a tray, it can easily slide underneath or against a table. We did find assembly to be a bit difficult: the instructions weren’t super clear, and it took almost an hour to get it all put together. Once it’s together, though, it’s pretty easy to use and lightweight enough to move around with ease. Multiple modes and configs: highchair, toddler stool, lower chair, booster seat plus desk and seat set Size, Shape, and Weight: A high chair will likely end up sitting in your dining room or kitchen for a few years, depending on how many different little ones are going to be using it. Some high chairs are more compact, but many have bases that can be quite wide. Sturdy high chairs tend to be a bit bulky and large to ensure your baby’s safety. Always look at the overall dimensions (especially if it folds down into a smaller shape for storage) to ensure that the high chair will fit comfortably in whatever room of your home you’re going to use it in the most. You should also pay attention to the overall weight, especially if you think you’ll be moving the high chair from room to room on a regular basis. While safety and stabilityare the most important factors to consider, the best high chairs should be easy to cleanas well. Babies have a tendency to leave a trail of crumbs behind and smear their food all over any surface in their vicinity, meaning their high chair is going to need a pretty thorough cleaning after each and every meal. You want an option that doesn’t have hard-to-reach nooks and crannies where old food can hide and is easy to wipe clean when you only have a few moments to spare. Perhaps it doesn’t fit your requirements as expected, you’ve had a change of plans or you’ve simply changed your mind. Why We Like It: This chair has a sleek design, is incredibly easy to clean, and grows with your child even past their toddler years. One of the things we appreciated the most about this high chair during testing is how easy it is to clean. “You don’t even think of it as a hurdle or chore after meals!” our tester raved about the cleaning process. You can wipe the surfaces of the seat, tray, and legs with a damp cloth, and the tray can go in the dishwasher if needed. While the footrest does collect some food, it's also removable for cleaning. We also love the light color of the wood (though it is available in darker wood tones as well) because it makes food and stains less noticeable, which is ideal over time. After months of use by our long-term tester, the only part of the chair that started to look worn was the tray. We will, however, communicate with your pushchair manufacturer on your behalf to help ensure a smooth and efficient repair service.
Why We Like It: This is easy to assemble, use, and clean, with a sturdy feel and minimalist chic look to it. The chair has a very sturdy feel to it, with a wide base that keeps it from wobbling or feeling like it’s going to topple over. That said, that wide base also means it takes up a little bit of space in the room. In the lab, we tripped over the legs more than once. This may also make it less than ideal in a very small space. Still, it is super lightweight, which makes it easy to move around. We tested 31 high chairs in our New York testing lab as well as at home with our own kids. We consulted Ben Hoffman, M.D., pediatrician and nationally recognized expert in child injury prevention and education, to ensure we were looking at all of the important safety features and considerations. Why We Like It: This can be used as a high chair or a toddler chair with a weight capacity that makes it sturdy enough for even some adults to sit in it. MOA is an 8-in-1, multi-use highchair. Adapting over time from a highchair, to a low stool, booster seat, toddler stool, then a handy desk and seat.

The perfect place for your child to eat, discover & grow. The Maxi-Cosi MOA 8-in-1 Highchair is the ideal mealtime accessory for growing babies. This super stylish, multi-use chair transforms from a highchair to a low stool, booster seat, toddler stool, and even into a handy desk with a seat - making it the perfect place for your little one to eat, discover, and grow.
One negative thing our real-world tester noted is that it’s a bit awkward to get a baby’s legs in and out when using this as a high chair, especially if your baby is on the larger side. “My little one is so tall and the chair seems a bit small to get his legs in,” our tester noted. “We practically need two people to put him into the chair, one to hold his body and another to awkwardly bend his legs to slide them into the chair.” It’s something worth keeping in mind, especially with the higher price point. That said, our testers did feel this was worth the price. Why We Like It: Sturdy and durable, this one can be used for infants and toddlers, and can even be used for two children at once, making it very versatile. The Stokke Steps can be used in two different ways: as a high chair for babies and as a toddler chair. One thing we love about the toddler chair option is that it has a 187-pound weight capacity, so it can even be a sufficient chair for some adults, meaning you’ll get years of use out of it.

Always use the internal harness: The American Academy of Pediatrics and experts we spoke toall stress the importance of always using the internal harness and crotch strap whenever your baby is seated in the high chair. This can prevent your baby from slipping down, falling, or becoming trapped, all of which can lead to injury or even death. Don’t use the tray without the harness securing your child in place. But Take Note: It doesn’t come with a tray (though you can buy one separately), and it is on the more expensive side. But Take Note: We felt the seat could have offered more support and encouraged better posture, and we also felt it could be a little too wobbly at times. A baby should never be placed in a high chair until they’re developmentally ready. “It’s important to make sure that kids are not being put in high chairs before they can sit up independently,” Dr. Hoffman says. “For most kids, that’s 4 to 6 months old (at an absolute minimum), but that doesn’t mean that every kid 4 to 6 months [old] is going to work in every seat. Always make sure that the fit fits your child and that your child is developmentally ready for it.” In general, if your child can sit up on their own, they should be able to sit in a high chair.
