And these are their generations: the first-born of Ishmael, Nebaioth, then Kedar, and Adbeel, and Mibsam, Mishma, and Dumah, Massa, Hadad, and Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah. These are the sons of Ishmael.” Judah: “This time I will praise the LORD” ( Genesis 29:35). Judah was a very redemptive character because although he did not want to kill Joseph, it was his idea to sell Joseph into slavery ( Genesis 37). Then, he was the brother who would not leave Benjamin ( Genesis 44). The tribe of Judah was significantly blessed by Jacob. He gave Judah the blessing of royalty because Jesus, the Savior would, come from the line of Judah ( Matthew 1:3). Judah’s territory was the southwest region. After the division of the kingdom into Judah in the south and Israel in the north, the divided Israelites led separate lives, with intermittent bloody wars being waged between them. However, they maintained their religious heritage in observance of their traditions. The two kingdoms were disobedient to God through worship of idols, and they were conquered by other gentile nations. Judah was conquered by the Babylonians while Israel was conquered by the Assyrians. The tribes of Israel were scattered to various parts of the world as punishment for their disobedience. The Significance of the Israelite Tribes Today

Isaac is depicted in Scripture as a man of great faithfulness to the Lord. God told Abraham to sacrifice him ( Genesis 22), and Isaac submitted to God faithfully, but later a ram was chosen in his place for the sacrifice and he was spared. Rebekah was chosen as a wife for Isaac ( Genesis 24). Like Sarah, she was barren and later conceived, becoming pregnant with twins. Isaac was sixty years old when she gave birth to them. Their story and relationship with God is something that we can draw from even today to learn about Him, as God does not change, nor does His Law, and as believers we can ground ourselves in the Principles of God's Kingdom outlined for the first time in the Old Testament that are the same yesterday, today and forever.

In the same manner, the last words of Jacob were meant to be a testament for his literal sons, who were by his side, but also for all his future spiritual descendants. His testament was a prophecy of hope to strengthen believers of all times, to let them know that God will indeed be victorious in the end and triumph over His enemies. They were ruthless and brutally stole Micah's idols and carved images ( Judges 18), adopted his form of paganism, and convinced a young Levite to become their priest in their idolatrous practices. Moses' prophesy about the Danites refers to future idolatry and departure from God when he mentions Bashan.

Joseph's two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, who were adopted by Jacob, became the Patriarchs of two tribes ( Genesis 48:5-6). Reuben lost his rights as firstborn, as he had defiled his father's bed ( Gen. 35:22 - 49:3-4), thus, his inheritance was divided between the two sons of Joseph. The Magazine spoke with Rochman during his latest trip to Africa, where he was filming episodes for his upcoming documentary We Were Never Lost. Speaking from the Ivory Coast, he discussed the content of the documentary: ARI GREENSPAN LIGHTS a ‘hanukkiah’ in the Ivory Coast. (credit: Courtesy Ari Greenspan) The tribe of Adbeel is often identified with the people in the land of Arubu who became subjects to Tiglath Pileser II (744-727 BC). Their chieftain was called Idibi’ilu and he operated as the Assyrian king’s agent on the boarders of Egypt. His tribe was said to have dwelt far away, towards the west. From this reference, some historians have thought that the tribe of Adbeel lived in the Sinai. Then I saw another angel coming up from the east, having the seal of the living God. He called out in a loud voice to the four angels who had been given power to harm the land and the sea: ‘Do not harm the land or the sea or the trees until we put a seal on the foreheads of the servants of our God.’ Then I heard the number of those who were sealed: 144,000 from all the tribes of Israel” ( Revelation 7:2-4). Rather, the term nidchei Yisrael refers to those with a spiritual connection to Judaism – in other words, spiritual descendants of the nation. To Birnbaum, this much is clear in their commitment to the Torah and mitzvot. The ancestral tribe of the Levites, however, was not counted along with the others. The Lord had said to Moses: ‘You must not count the tribe of Levi or include them in the census of the other Israelites. Instead, appoint the Levites to be in charge of the tabernacle of the covenant law—over all its furnishings and everything belonging to it. They are to carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings; they are to take care of it and encamp around it” ( Numbers 1:47-50). What Happened to the Tribe of Joseph? That is why God chose the Israelite people with whom he stipulated the Covenant. And this Covenant consisted in the fact that God would make His people His family and protect them by giving them a land where they could live in peace and worship Him, and His people should be faithful to Him, following His Law which was just and fair. However, several members of Ephraim, Manasseh, and Simeon defected to Judah when they realized that God was with the righteous King Asa (2 Chr 15:9). The Levites became the priesthood of the nation of Israel and are not counted among the Patriarchs of the 12 Tribes of Israel. When the land was divided, their tribe did not receive any land; 48 cities scattered around Israel and located within the territories of the other tribes were allotted to them.
