About this deal
The Lagotto Romagnolo is the only dog breed recognized for sniffing out truffles (although virtually any breed could be trained for this purpose). With truffles being highly perishable and notoriously difficult to classify, it’s no wonder they remain a mystery to many.
This intimacy between animals and truffles indirectly influences the success of mycorrhizal plant species.Another consequence was no more grazing sheep or shepherds who pruned trees for feed and fuelwood, so former truffle plantations turned into closed forests that no longer produced truffles.
borchii and 2,4-Dithiapentane occurring in all species but mostly characteristic of the white truffle T. Production is almost exclusively European, with France accounting for 45%, Spain 35%, Italy 20%, and small amounts from Slovenia, Croatia and the Australian states of Tasmania and Western Australia (see below). Thus, truffle fungi and other ectomycorrhizal fungi facilitate a complex system of nutrient exchange between plants, animals, and microbes. In classical times, their origins were a mystery that challenged many; Plutarch and others thought them to be the result of lightning, warmth, and water in the soil, while Juvenal thought thunder and rain to be instrumental in their origin.
In arid-land ecosystems, these fungi become essential for the survival of their host plants by enhancing the ability to withstand drought.
