About this deal

An apple smell and nifty bottle, producing lovely shiny dry plates, but at this price I’d expect it to perform better than cheaper options and it doesn’t. As for “4 x less scrubbing”, it took an age to shift Weetabix. For good measure, after cleaning the dishes I added a tablespoonful of old cooking oil to the water to mimic a well used washing-up bowl and washed a third plate. Then I left the plates to drip dry. In recent times Ecover have developed a completely zero waste version of the washing-up liquid called Liquid Zero. Non-ionic surfactants, such as cocamide, alkyl polyglycosides, and ethoxylates, are better with oil and organic dirt and good in hard water – plus they are less likely than anionic surfactants to cause skin irritation. When your dishwater turns cloudy, it’s down to the non-ionic surfactants.

Smells of lemon fruit pastilles, but I miss the green colouring which masks the dirty water better. The egg plate needs 25 seconds in the water and a bit of a scrub; for dried-on Weetabix the plate needed a bit of elbow grease but did the job. A faint “meaty” smell on the clean plates, which aren’t that shiny. Too late? Stop the dishwasher. Lay down towels to soak up all those suds and thoroughly clean out the dispenser to remove any trace of washing up liquid. If the foam still isn’t disappearing, pour a mug of white vinegar inside your machine to help banish those bubbles. Run a couple of cycles until it’s fully clean and dry. How we test washing up liquid We use a spectrophotometer (a fancy measuring device) to test exactly how clean the plate is after scrubbing. And we repeat this process four times and the scores are averaged for consistency. The foam test The most important ingredients are surfactants, responsible for lifting dirt and holding it in the water. There are three kinds in washing-up liquid: However, if you would like to wash those dishes yourself then grab the longer-lasting Persil Washing Up Liquid. The 500ml bottle is tough on stains and its superior cleaning action leaves behind a lovely scent of lemon. Sponge Scourers 10pk - 49p

Close second: Aldi's Tandil Ultra Power Soak N' Clean gave the more expensive product a run for its money. Clean winner? How the top two compare Thin liquid (maybe as it has to go through a pump?) which smells of sweet shops. On egg, needs 30 seconds and mostly cloth work plus a finish with a scrubby. For Weetabix I scrubbed so hard I broke a sweat and the plate still dried with greasy marks. There’s a distinct lingering smell on the clean plates. The eco brands intrigued me, too. After all, the big baddies of the detergent world, phosphates, which cause “algae bloom” in our waterways, are severely restricted these days and not generally used in washing-up liquid. Ideally, yes. Nobody wants the lingering taste of soap in their Sunday roast, and leftover washing up liquid can leave unattractive smears on glass.

Anionic (negatively charged) surfactants, which include sulfates, sulfonates, and gluconates. They are the most commonly used surfactant, and are great for “particulate soil” (bitty dirt) but not so good with oil. Mildly scented. Egg needs 45 seconds and a good scrub but Weetabix cleans up perfectly well with a light scrub. Does well with extra oil – just a hint of smell and clean plates. Couple of drips on the dried plates and a tiny bit of grease but pretty good for the price. The GHI team put 24 brands of washing up liquid through two rigorous tests. Firstly, they counted how many greasy plates one manufacturer-recommended dose could bring to a clean finish. Produces lots of bubbles, even after adding oil. For egg, 15 seconds is not enough but a 25 second soak and it comes off with a bit of abrasion. With Weetabix it does well, just needed a little finishing with the scourer to get the last hardened bits off. The dried, clean plates are faintly musty, but shiny, with a few bubble marks. However, detergents are mostly made using petrochemicals, and some degrade much more readily than others. Eco brands generally use plant-based detergents, or at least ones which break down speedily and harmlessly – that said, there is little regulation, so it is worth scrutinising the claims made. It’s not magic, but it is clever. Washing up liquid contains molecules with two parts – one loves water and the other hates it. The hydrophobic side grabs onto grease (i.e. the food residue on your plate) but the hydrophilic side is stronger and pulls the molecule into the water, taking all that oil and grime with it. How much washing up liquid should I use? Pale but effective; on Weetabix it’s impressive, needs just a bit of a scrub to come up clean. Egg needs 25 seconds and a bit of firm cloth action. Plates clean to a nice shine but dry with lots of drip marks and some grease. Amphoteric surfactants, such as betaines, can be anionic or cationic, and are the mildest surfactant, often used in baby shampoo. They also combine with anionic surfactants, making them less likely to irritate skin, and work well in hard water. But if money is tight (or you'd prefer to spend your hard-earned on something more fun than dishwashing liquid), then the Aldi alternative is a winner. We use a scrub test and a foam test (see 'How we test' below) because they both play a part in getting your dishes clean. Foam (or 'general detergency' in technical terms) helps prevent food scraps from being redistributed on your plates once you've washed them, but it doesn't actually remove the grime in the first place. The scrub test shows how well the detergent removes grime from your dishes – the most important aspect of dishwashing liquid. Even after decades of use, Morning Fresh continues to be the most trusted dishwashing liquid on the market. Thanks to its unique blend of natural ingredients and advanced cleaning technologies, you can rest assured that your dishes will sparkle. Plus, our easy-to-use bottle design makes it simple to get started when it's time for those tough cleaning tasks But most importantly, it’s better for your health. Most mainstream formulas contain the chemical sodium laureth sulphate (SLS), which causes foam and strengthens the cleaning process. However, it’s also an irritant, so it’s best to get it all off before eating from your plates. What happens if you put washing up liquid in the dishwasher?

For nearly 40 years, Morning Fresh has been one of the leading washing up liquids worldwide. Our superior grease cutting power and performance make it the ideal product to clean dishes safely and effectively. Just one squirt will leave your dishes sparkling and fresh every time Time to roll up my sleeves, don my rubber gloves and set-to test 16 different washing-up liquids on plates smeared liberally with dried-on egg and Weetabix. I armed myself with a dishcloth and a “scrubby” made by bundling together the nylon nets that oranges come in – a thrifty tip worth trying – and allowed a half teaspoon of liquid for every litre of hand-hot water (50C).

Most of us use more washing up liquid than we need to, which wastes money, time and water (as rinsing takes longer). The recommended dose varies between brands, but you shouldn’t need more than 5ml (1.5 teaspoons or a couple of squirts) of non-concentrated formula per five litres of water. Please note that parcels weighing over 2kg may be sent via courier due to Royal Mail weight restrictions.
