A great way to practice numbers while also teaching ‘How many?’ and plural nouns is to play a fun numbers guessing game. Here is one of Games4esl’s ‘Telepathy Games’ about animals and numbers.
If you are working within an AAC user (especially for an emerging user/someone who is learning their system), try to match the drawn tile to the corresponding button in their device. AAC users can also target concepts like sentence expansion and describing. Just like a teacher would do, I go over the directions and rules, then model how to play the game, before allowing the girls to play independently. For example, before a player places a tile on their board, they are required to use a designated carrier phrase “I see a ___.” Or they have to generate a sentence using the word from the tile that they selected. If the games I select can be used as an independent game center, or fun activity for kids, I want to assure the kids are able to understand and follow directions on their own. You might also like to play Goat Lord. It is a unique board game that will require you to outsmart your opponent. Be the first one to collect 1000 goat points by developing the largest herd. For some of my younger kiddos, if I am working on a fluency shaping task within single words, I may have them use one of their strategies when producing each label (e.g., easy starts, stretchy speech, etc.). By allowing my daughter and her friends to give directions in the kids game videos, it gives myself and other teachers a transparent projection of how it will be played by kids when left on their own.As well as practicing numbers, this game is great to use as a warm-up activity. To begin, choose a number to count to. The number you choose will depend on your class size and how difficult you want the game to be. For this example, let’s choose the number 5. Then, tell the students that when the teacher says ‘Go!’, one student from the class must stand up and say the first number (one). Then, another student must stand up and say the next number (two). And so on until they get to five. Any student can stand up at any time they want. If two students stand up at the same time and say the same number, then they lose. Setting up Zingo is a simple process. First, keep the rules book handy, and scatter all the tiles on a plane surface. Next, ask students to put all their cards face down in the middle of the group and mix them up. Once the cards are mixed, ask students to take 10 random cards and tell them not to show the cards to the other students. Now the liar game can begin. Zingo! We'll make this short and sweet. Though this is not something I have taken on, I know therapists who have targeted certain phonemes by pasting their own pictures on the boards and Zingo tiles. This may take a bit of work but can certainly be a good investment of your time if you have individuals on your caseload working on the same target sounds! You can also have individuals say specific target word(s) at each turn even if they’re not directly related to the pictures on the board.
