About this deal

Most of the electric hand planers you’re going to find are corded. That means you have to plug it into a power outlet to use it. If you work inside a workshop or you don’t like having much dust to clean up after a project, you’d do well to consider this when making your choice. If it doesn’t have a dust port, there’s no way you’re going to hook a dust collector or shop vac to it. It will mess up your shop, requiring you to do cleanup later. You can certainly go for a cordless electric planer too, although speed can be somewhat slower for these (10,000-15,000rpm).

Attaching a shop vac to the unit is very easy, and it can be done from both side of the planer, which makes it very convenient to use. This Makita hand planer is not just for simple DIY home improvement projects. It’s for professional general contractors, framers, carpenters boat fabricators and log home builders looking for the best-in-class 12-1/4 inch hand planer. To match that width capacity, the Makita KP312 comes equipped with a 15 amp motor delivering up to 12,000 RPM of speed for the most demanding of planing operations. It’s an 8 amp planer with 4-3/8 inch width, with a cutterhead producing up to 32,000 cuts per minute to ensure you get a very smooth surface on your workpiece. With a no-load speed of 15,000 rpm, the planer produces up to 32,000 cuts per minute ensuring the smoothest finish on the material you’re working on. The powerful motor ensures the motor does not bug down even when working with the max depth settings.

Forming part of Bosch’s “blue” line of professional quality tools, the GHO 26-82 D is one of the best electric planers you can get. Cordless models have less power and are fairly bulky, especially the higher-performance models as they need at least a 2.5Ah battery, although we recommend 5Ah. Note: Unless you own compatible batteries, your costs will jump considerably if you buy a body-only model. Cutter Head & Blade Type Talking about depth settings, the Milwaukee 2623-20 is fairly easy to adjust, as it comes equipped with a fully functional depth adjustment dial with 20 depth presets, making it very suitable for high precision projects.

This model features a powerful 710W motor. As it’s corded, you don’t have the extra battery weight, so it remains easy to manoeuvre despite its power. It also features the easy blade change Bosch WoodRazor system, using a one-blade drum developed especially for smooth, even results. With its 550W motor and impressive no-load speed of 19,500 rpm, you would expect this model to be capable of a greater planing depth than its maximum of 1.5mm. However, it does have a decent rebate depth of 8mm, and it is easy to finely adjust the depth thanks to its infinitely variable adjustment knob. With a dual side dust extraction, a suitable shop vac can be connected on either side of the tool for easy dust collection and ultimately keeping the work area clean. Setting depth adjustment is also a very easy, as the planer is equipped with a metric scaled depth adjustment knob which is very easy to read adjust.

This planer has a single pass of 82mm with a respectable max planing depth of 2.0mm. A max rebate depth of 9.0mm and a no-load speed of 15,000 rpm put this model on par with the best cordless planers. You can easily adjust the depth by 0.1mm increments for extra precision. Planing and rebate depths are features you should definitely factor in when choosing an electric planer. The best cordless and electric planers have a planning depth per pass of around 2-3mm and a maximum rebate depth of 9-12mm.There are different sizes of electric hand planers. When talking about their size, I’m referring to the size of the shoe or the width capacity. The 550 Watt motor spins up the single cutting blade to an impressive 19,500 rpm and you can plane up to 1.5mm per pass. There’s a “parking rest” on the rear shoe to avoid damaging the workbench as well. Just like the “blue” professional Bosch planer, there’s just one Woodrazor cutting blade to worry about. Adjusting it with the included hex key is a simple operation.
