The perfect updating of the classic Christmas Country House mystery . . . Fabulous festive fun’ DEREK FARRELL

This is my second book by this author, both based around Christmas. This mystery has a very Golden Age feel, with events taking place on a train. We have Roz, a retired ex-detective, heading to Scotland for the birth of her first grandchild. She has a difficult relationship with her at times, feeling she has put her career first and still having issues with coming to terms with events when she was young and about to become a young mother herself. At Nene Valley Santa Express, your Santa Steam experience starts with a welcome from our station staff and badge team – entertainment is provided at busy weekends. This is followed by an exciting visit to Santa’s log cabin where each child receives a special present from the old gentleman himself. Following a short wait families then join our steam hauled, decorated train for a fun-filled ride to Peterborough and return. My other issue with the book is that none of the characters come across as particularly likeable; they don't really develop any kind of personality other than long descriptions of what they're doing or obsessing about. This isn't helped by unnecessarily long descriptions of how a character uses his vape pen, or eats a sweet. In the first part of the book, the detective, Roz, is trying to get to Scotland to be with her daughter who has gone into labour. Roz feels that she's failing her daughter by not being there. We know this because we're told it over and over again. Roz has made a traditional Scottish sweet to take with her. We hear about this sweet endlessly while Roz is waiting for the train, how it tastes, how long it lasts, how she should have sent some to her daughter in the post. I'd give it negative stars if I could. I resist researching mysteries before I read them, I don't want them spoiled. But I wish I had researched this one. Travel to Levisham Station, where you will see a dazzling light show, as our heritage steam engine prepares for the return journey. This is the perfect Christmas book. Get it for yourself to read when the nights are cold and dark and give it as a present. To everyone!’ MARTYN WAITES main point is that the themes of domestic abuse and sexual violence, while important to discuss, were too much for this novel. before reading it seems like a bit of festive crime fiction, so the heavy topics would throw people off. setting it at christmas time was unnecessary. didn’t like the detective honestly. took way too long to get into the murder and detective part (about half way through the book) because there were too many other things the book was trying to do. made it slow and too long, repeats itself a lot, and there’s a lot of telling not showing which created some strange dialogue. A genuine Christmas Feast. Its traditional wrapping conceals a fiendish mystery, a heart of darkness and – in Roz – a wonderfully flawed heroine that you will absolutely fall in love with. If you like your Christmas murderous and melancholy, it's going to keep you very happy over the Festive Period’ DEREK FARRELL That was the magic of trains. The world seemed to pass you by while you were still, yet somehow you got to where you wanted to go. If only life were like that.” And it’s a shame, because the story itself really isn’t bad. It just has nothing to do with Christmas, reads nothing like the summary implies it will in tone, content, or theme, and has the potential to be a nasty surprise for readers who are sensitive to this type of material.

Christmas Express is the great family board game for those that believe in Santa, and those that wish they still did. This was still a 3 star read if you can tolerate the discussion of darker social issues. I think I'm more annoyed than I would otherwise be because I LOVE this sort of set up and I WANTED it to get it right. We do have something of a more nuanced character in Roz and I expect we will be hearing more from her in the years to come. When I started this novel, I expected a nice Christmas cozy with all the trimmings but this is definitely not that. First, the only connection to Christmas is the time of year but it hardly factors into the story. Second, it was a long and sometimes draggy ride to the first murder which doesn’t occur until about a third of the way into the story. And there is nothing cozy here. This is a very dark tale with several references to rape, sexual, emotional and physical assaults as well as descriptions of a high risk pregnancy. Pacific Central Station - 1150 Station Street, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada (Chicago train station) Did you expect any of that having read the publisher’s summary. Yeah, I didn’t think so. And that is a HUGE problem.
