About this deal

Jones’s financial circumstances do not give him the luxury of throwing away his job, so he bites the bullet and surges ahead. She approaches Alfred to say goodbye, where he tearfully wishes her luck as he ponders what to do next. In addition to the change of the gender of Maxwell , Marry also isn’t as extravagant in the film as in the book. This worked in that KS-T was perfectly cast, but she didn’t really get enough to get her teeth into. No one would talk like that in interviews with investigators and no interrogator would allow getting sidetracked.

It could have been a sweet story but the characters are not up to scratch - I found the politicians too inept to be true for example - and the epistolary style is full of unconvincing moments, and what about that ending, lol. Yemeni tribesmen waiting for the evening rise by the side of a wadi with fishing rods in their hands. You can perceive specific conflicts, but when it's onscreen you have to create something different, something the audience can see and feel and root for. You might find the prose annoying, as it is not linear storytelling, but a collection of diary, interviews, and letters.

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen by Paul Torday | Waterstones

For the said consultants – mostly from the West – this is manna from heaven, because you get paid whatever happens. The formula successfully diluted the book’s central message of having faith and following your dream, but acknowledges that dreams can be shattered.

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen by Paul Torday | Goodreads

It was a light enough read and not unpleasant, which is why I'm veering over to three stars rather than relegating it to a more disappointed two. Torday too hits quite a few of his marks along the way, but not nearly enough to look like he really knows what he's doing. I get the one-dimensionality of the political characters used, but the dynamics between these three were supposed to be a huge part of the soul of the book, and they just felt like a really bad romance novel. She is engaged, but her fiancé has been sent to fight in Iraq, and his fate there weighs heavily on her. Diary entries, correspondence and answers to interview questions are all just thinly disguised narrative.

After a confrontation with his wife in which he realises that their marriage is over and that he is in love with Harriet, Alfred convinces the Sheikh to give the farmed salmon a try.
