About this deal

The version tested was the 90mm ShockStop PRO, fitted to a gravel bike using the Redshift Kitchen Sink and replacing a stem of the same length. While I don't own one, so can't comment, there are internet reports of happy users fitting Shockstops to time trial bikes to ease the impact of riding over rough surfaces in aggressive, unforgiving positions.

They will tell you how to set up the elastomers for your weight and most importantly how to change them without damaging the stem. The six-degree angle means you can flip the stem up or down to suit your preferences, and the sleek aesthetics will look great on any road bike setup. The Swiss brand has been experimenting with low-key suspension on its gravel bikes over the past few years, with the original BMC URS featuring an elastomer in the seatstays and the BMC URS LT adding 20mm of travel in the fork.

Over several months I noticed a distinct reduction in tricep fatigue past the three-hour ride mark, which was not attributable to anything other than the Shockstop and its fatigue-reducing properties.

Indeed when I received the stem it was set to a positive rise, but not five minutes later I’d had the internals dissected and reinstalled to achieve the minus 6 degrees I’m more familiar with. Overall, the Kinekt is a well made piece of kit that does seem to reduce pain and fatigue in your upper body and arms. The Shockstop does in fact feel quite stiff to ride, which is reassuring after what I’ve just alluded to, but it brings me to the point of wondering if handlebar compliance is even worth it. As it was I found the recommended elastomer settings for my weight to be spot on over the long term, so I never tried to go up or down.BMC claims the torsional stiffness is equal to a standard stem and that you’ll only feel the effects of the suspension when it comes to smoothing out rougher surfaces. Includes 5 swappable elastomers (2 pre-installed, 3 additional) to customise the ride feel for your bike, weight, and riding style. The first big 'wow' moment came when riding over a cattle grid that felt smoothed out substantially.

It achieves these weight savings thanks to the use of Titanium hardware, and weight reducing CNC machining. The minimal design of the ShockStop Suspension Stem and Suspension Seatpost blend seamlessly with the aesthetic of modern bikes, while reducing fatigue and strain. The elastomers are rated for stiffness using a durometer scale from 50 to 90, with 90 being the stiffest. After finding Redshift‘s Shockstop suspension stem very effective, I’ve been testing the 6061 T6 aluminium alloy Shockstop suspension seatpost, which is designed to replace standard round seatposts. The Redshift ShockStop PRO stem is a suspension stem designed to provide added comfort and control to a road or gravel bike. If I had to make a comparison, I'd say the overall effect of the Shockstop is like going from a 23mm tyre at 100psi to a 38mm at 50psi or less – although it's for the front wheel only obviously. While Warren loves fast road bikes and the latest gravel bikes, he also believes electric bikes are the future of transport.
