About this deal

As this is such a 'hot read' on multiple bestseller lists I felt kind of bad for my non popular view, only to see that the Goodreads rating is actually just 3. You’ll have to have your 21-year-old influencer girlfriend upstairs doing yoga and I’ll be banging on the ceiling saying, keep it down please”. The plague of these past years - if we exclude the pandemic, obviously - is the publishing industry’s obsession with creating a good-looking cover. Overall, this is very easy to read, it’s well written, I love the darkly wry style of the author who has acquired a new fan!

I thought the premise was fantastic and I really enjoyed reading as Grace executed her cunning plans as well as her musings on all manner of subjects including wealth, class and even influencers. The novel’s protagonist, 28-year-old Grace Bernard, sets off on a mission to eliminate all members of her family with an end-goal of seeking revenge on her father, millionaire businessman and stereotypical playboy who abandoned her and her mother as a baby. For this latest elaborate murder, Grace gets help from a teenage hacker to harness the power of the internet and exploit Janine's 'smart house', where everything - from heating to cooking to cupboards - is controlled remotely. Single-minded to the point of obsession about her plan to exact revenge, she freely exploits other people’s vulnerabilities to get what she needs. Isn’t it so unfair that he get to benefit from the murders financially but was always from old money.I've been wanting to read a good anti-hero type story for a while, and though I've had my eye on the Sweetpea books, this one caught my eye due to the cover and the hype it received.

We got sections where Grace described how she plotted her next murder, then in exacting detail we got the killing ( with a confusing switch to present tense). The novelty value of those cynical comments wore off before I’d got a quarter of the way into the book. Grace Bernard confesses in the prologue to having killed six members of her own family and gotten away with it, yet is writing this from prison, where she is incarcerated for a murder she did not commit. They’re often added to the ends of paragraphs, and they’re caustic, witty, judgemental and completely deadpan. All this made the pacing very slow and managed to make murders and plot twists excruciatingly plain and boring. At school she had an "amazing" English teacher who taught her more about Lady Macbeth than about Macbeth, and a history teacher who made her reappraise Ann Boleyn "and all these other women in history who aren't quite what you think". i was attracted to this book bc of the anti-heroine promise as i love an unlikeable, morally grey female character - but grace as a character was far too muddled, and it was clear that the author still hadn’t fully fleshed her out. She is scathing and views the world with a contempt I can't but help admire with the same adoration the Beyhive give their queen (I am a member of said hive, the love runs deep! Without really meaning to, you find yourself rooting for her and revelling in the ingenious murder methods she uses.

Bella Mackie, daughter of former Guardian editor and Principal of Lady Margaret Hall, Alan Rusbridger, is a journalist who has written for VOGUE, The Guardian, VICE and GQ, to name but a few. It’s not as though she was desperate for another husband but “when Greg came along, I thought ‘you are great, I am going to nail this down’, because he’s on the radio, people like him, I thought I better lock it down now … it’s quite easy to get a divorce when you don’t own anything together but now we have a dog and a house. I have had my eyes on this exceptionally brilliant book for a while now and was lucky enough to have an advance copy to sink my teeth into! This immediately loses any sense of suspense at what is to follow, as you know that she will be talking about seven murders, one of which she didn't do and six that she did. There is a real connection to the reader / the audience through the narration which was warm, sarcastic, funny and very authentic. Her first book, Jog On: How Running Saved My Life, was a Sunday Times bestseller which bravely chronicled her battle with anxiety and her discovery of how exercise could help lift her from the deep-rooted mental and personal problems she ended her twenties with.
