It wasn't so easy to accept frequent use of the term, "Jew", in a pejorative sense. The novel's setting was destined to be the center of the Holocaust only 15 years later, so the antisemitism was a fact of life in that time and place. The marriage subsequently affects life within Lipce and its inhabitants in both direct and indirect ways and spurs discord, jealously and intrigue. Ziemia Obiecana ( The Promised Land), possibly Reymont's best-known novel, is a social panorama of the city of Łódź during the industrial revolution, full of dramatic detail, presented as an arena of the struggle for survival. In the novel, the city destroys those who accept the rules of the "rat race", as well as those who do not. The moral gangrene equally affects the three main characters, a German, a Jew, and a Pole. This dark vision of cynicism, illustrating the bestial qualities of men and the law of the jungle, where ethics, noble ideas and holy feelings turn against those who believe in them, are, as the author intended, at the same time a denunciation of industrialisation and urbanisation. However, Reymont does so in an indirect way (perhaps so as not to fall foul of tsarist censors who would otherwise have forbidden publication) and paints no romantic illusions about the possibility of nationhood.

Władysław Stanisław Reymont ( Polish: [vwaˈdɨswaf ˈɾɛjmɔnt], born Rejment; 7 May 1867 – 5 December 1925) was a Polish novelist and the laureate of the 1924 Nobel Prize in Literature. D.K. Welchman insisted the novel itself used naturalism to depict everyday life, including peasants, villagers and pastoral animals. But Reymont was also in parts wonderfully evocative in his picturesque descriptions of characters, down to their costumes and mannerisms.
