About this deal

This Emotion Thesaurus Vocabulary Grid Poster is a super versatile resource that can be used in a number of different ways to support your class. The Emotion Thesaurus is a reference book that provides writers with a list of emotions and associated physical and mental responses. It can help writers to avoid using clichéd descriptions of emotions and to create more nuanced and believable characters. By using the Emotion Thesaurus, writers can show their characters’ emotions through their actions and behaviors, rather than telling the reader what the character is feeling. How can the Emotion Thesaurus be used to write convincing characters? Take a look at the people around you. Some of them are wide open, others keep to themselves. Some are loud, some quiet and reserved. Human beings react to situations in very different ways. That’s what authors want to do with their characters, and it’s not always easy to write what you want them to feel/think/say/do.

As a writer, it’s important to have a strong vocabulary and understanding of synonyms and antonyms. By using a variety of words to describe emotions, you can create a more nuanced and vivid portrayal of your characters and their experiences. This can help to engage readers and make your writing more impactful. In addition to providing synonyms and antonyms, the Emotion Thesaurus also includes examples of physical and internal cues associated with each emotion. This can help you to create a more realistic and believable portrayal of your characters’ emotional experiences. Use body language cues: Nonverbal cues can be just as important as dialogue when it comes to conveying emotion. The Emotion Thesaurus provides a list of body language cues for each emotion, such as “clenched fists” for agitation or “hugging oneself” for comfort. Make a list of your body language crutches (frowning, smiling, shrugging, head shaking, etc.). Use your word processor’s search and replace feature to highlight these so you can pinpoint where the emotional description needs some freshening up.” p. 47 The Emotion Thesaurus includes a variety of synonyms for different emotions, allowing writers to choose the most appropriate word for their character’s emotional state. For example, instead of using the word “happy,” writers can choose from a range of synonyms such as content, elated, or jubilant. How can the Emotion Thesaurus be used to write about overwhelming emotions?Emotions are a subjective response to situations and can vary from person to person. It is important to recognize and respect each person’s emotional response to a situation, even if it differs from your own. Empathy and sympathy are crucial in understanding and supporting others through their emotional experiences. Using this resource will allow your students to expand their feelings vocabulary at KS2. Providing children with the words they need to accurately vocalise how they are feeling is an extremely powerful and important thing. The first step in overcoming negative emotions is identifying what they are and what they are tied to. This Emotion Thesaurus Vocabulary Grid Poster will help your students to reach that first step. There is also a lot of positive vocabulary included in this resource, to help children vocalise when they are feeling good. The description for smells is extensive, but I will try to narrow it down to a shorter version of what I was thinking. It would combine a lot of what you already have, but I think it would help writers become more rich in their story telling. I am not as good a writer as others I have not been doing it long. I'm withholding a star because I have not tested out its power of practical use. I have no doubt that it's very practical 😌 I just don't feel comfortable dishing out that final star without giving it a test run, in this case.

It is important to note that emotions are subjective and can be influenced by a variety of factors, including body language, thoughts, and external stimuli. For example, a situation that may elicit fear in one person may not have the same effect on another. It is also important to recognize that emotions can be complex and can overlap, such as feeling both excitement and fear at the same time. Subjective Response to Situations Each entry is followed by its definition, the physical signs and behaviours, the internal sensations, mental responses, acute or long-term responses for the emotion, signs the emotion is being suppressed, what the emotion may escalate to, what the emotion may de-escalate to, a list of associated power verbs, and-my personal favourite- a fantastic writer's tip. Understanding emotions is an essential aspect of human interaction. It helps us to connect with others, express ourselves, and navigate our way through life. This section will explore the various aspects of emotional understanding, including the spectrum of feelings and subjective responses to situations. The Spectrum of FeelingsWhen it comes to digital bundles, we have two options. (Please note that Emotion Amplifiers isn’t included.) As a newbie/wanna be writer, I'm always looking for tools to help me improve. Writing good stories take study, practice and motivation. I'll admit that, when I first heard about The Emotion Thesaurus, I reacted against the idea of a reference book full of 'beats' of action (he bit his lip! he ripped at his hair!). But... but... your beats should come organically! you should know your characters so well that their actions come to you automatically! you should strive for originality in your writing, not all this lip-biting/hair-ripping! I’m using a variety of descriptors to show emotion. Whenever I catch myself thinking about the character’s eyes, I look up the emotion I want to describe in my new thesaurus and come up with something fresh. I think I’ve died and gone to a writer’s heaven.
