About this deal

Given their chemical composition and gentle exfoliating effects, virtually anyone can use PHAs for a brighter, clearer, and more youthful complexion. According to the aforementioned 2004 review, “PHAs have been found to be compatible with clinically sensitive skin, including rosacea and atopic dermatitis [(eczema)], and can be used after cosmetic procedures.” Furthermore, this hydroxy acid can benefit those with sensitive, blemish-prone skin, helping to clear breakouts and eliminate buildup without aggravating your complexion. Even if you use an AHA toner throughout the spring, summer, and fall, swapping for a gentler PHA might be wise in the winter, when dryness and irritation are more prevalent. We advise that prior to exposure to sun you use a broad spectrum SPF, immediately and up to 7 days after.

Helps to smooth and hydrate, leaving your skin with a brighter, dewy finish. Warning or RestrictionsOften, these PHAs are mixed together in products, so you can't go wrong — particularly if you're looking for an exfoliator for sensitive skin. Ask any beauty editor what their ride-or-die product is for clear, dewy skin, and they'll give it to you straight: liquid exfoliants. I'm talking alpha or beta hydroxy acids (think: glycolic, lactic, or salicylic) that help treat everything from acne to fine lines and dark spots. But even though they're known as the gentler alternative to physical exfoliants (aka those gritty-ass face scrubs you used in high school), they can still be pretty harsh on highly-sensitive skin. And that's why the somewhat under-the-radar acid that's trending right now is the gentle giant known as polyhydroxy acid (PHA).

HOW POTENT IS GLYCOIC ACID TONER?Our Glycolic Acid Toner contains 10% Glycolic Acid helps to keep skin looking healthy at a safe concentration and 5% Witch Hazel helps to minimise excess oil making it the strongest exfoliating in our range. We only recommend it for advanced acid users without sensitive skin. Extremely sensitive skins should start low on Crystal Retinal 1 (0.01% retinal), with Crystal Retinal 3 (0.03%) best for sensitive skins or for those nervous about using retinal. Most people can start on Crystal Retinal 6 (0.06%) and gradually move up to Crystal Retinal 10 (0.1%) & 20 (0.2%) for clinical-strength results. RETINAL VS RETINOL Retinol is two conversion steps away from active retinoid ‘retinoic acid’, whereas retinal is just one step away. So you get faster, elevated results. This disrupts the hydrogen bonds that hold dead skin cells together and allows them to be easily removed by water when rinsed off. PHA skincare can also really come into its own in a skincare routine for acne - gently banishing excess oils, but without drying out your skin too severely, which is a common issue with a lot of blemish treatments. Is PHA better than AHA?In general, you can safely use PHAs three to four times a week, since they are more gentle than other acids. Keep in mind, the right amount depends on your individual skin type. "I always recommend starting slow and increasing as tolerated, which might look like starting twice a week, then increasing to three times a week and eventually every other day, if possible," Dr. Weinstein says. Is it safe to use PHAs with ingredients like vitamin C or retinol? The two main acids that belong to the PHA family are lactobionic acid and gluconolactone. To get into the specifics, these two are very similar in the way they work on the skin. Having a large molecular size is what sets PHAs apart. But what does it mean for your skin? Keep scrolling to find out. They work on the surface. Lactic Acid (derived from milk): Lactic acid is an AHA with a larger molecule size than glycolic acid, which means that it is gentler on the skin, making it a good choice for more sensitive skin.
