About this deal

It sounds obvious to say this but we know that you’ll fuel better with foods that taste delicious. If a bar is tasty, not only are you much less likely to under-fuel, but you can turn moments of struggle into psychological treats. And who doesn’t need that six hours into a mountain ultra! Each bar has a unique flavour, but none of them overpower your taste buds in any one regard. They all taste great, but the Zenzero was the standout for me, simply because I love the combination of lemon and ginger, which gives the fruit and nut base a subtly sweet and tangy flavour. Dried fruit (figs, dates), mixed nuts (almonds, pistachios), cane sugar, brown rice syrup, gram flour, stem ginger, tapioca flour, lemon juice & zest, mixed spices, guarana powder *, matcha tea *, vanilla bean paste, wafer paper. Sugar substitutes can play havoc with your digestive system and artificial sweeteners found in low-calorie bars upset your body’s natural insulin response to sugar. How many times have you reached that point in a run where it’s time to eat but you find yourself delaying because you’re dreading another onslaught of artificial flavour? Us too.

At Veloforte we believe real food is always a better option than heavily processed and synthetic foods. Energy from natural sources is more appealing, tastier and more enjoyable to eat. Eating real food can help ward off painful bloating, wind and the stomach upsets that are common with synthetic bars.Dates, pecans & almonds, cane sugar, brown rice syrup, gram flour, agave nectar, tapioca flour, maple syrup, spices, sea salt, wafer paper, vanilla seeds. Energy bars can be a great go-to for those times when you need to top up your stores but you don’t have the time before a run. I was able to half the amount of bulk I would usually take for rides of 4-5 hours, and graze on just a couple of Veloforte bars. Think 3-hour marathon training runs where you’re moving at a low heart rate. Or ultra runs where you’re really out to enjoy a moving picnic. Fuelling your recovery means you should aim to rehydrate, replenish glycogen stores & start to rebuild muscle within the first 30 minutes after exercise. WHAT IS VELOFORTE'S CAPPO PROTEIN SUPER SHAKE?

In terms of calories there’s a hefty amount for such small parcels – a compact 70g bar, neatly wrapped in foil baking parchment, contains around 300kcal, typically with around 50g of carbs and 5g of protein. Personally, I would still mix it up with cheaper whole fruits or nuts, but it's certainly useful to add another string to your nutritional bow. Verdict Protein bars are typically designed as a convenient way to support muscle repair after exercise. They come with various different ratios of protein, fat and carbs and wildly differing levels of sugar and additives.

Veloforte Natural Energy Bar Box (12 x 62g)

To actively fuel your recovery aim to drink Cappo within 60 minutes of finishing exercise. O nce mixed, keep refrigerated and enjoy within 24 hours. Simple. WHAT IS VELOFORTE'S NOVA PROTEIN RECOVERY SHAKE?

It all sounded very romantic, but the proof, of course, was going to be in the eating, not the story telling, so I was keen to see how they fared as fuel for a long day in the saddle. First up the Pronto, which contains Matcha tea and offers 80mg of natural caffeine to perk you up in an instant (Veloforte says this is equivalent to an espresso). This might be a good choice if you need that extra caffeine hit when there's no coffee shop on your route. Optimising your running nutrition is a personal pursuit. What works for your super-fast, ultra-running friend might not work for you. But there are some basic principles you can follow that’ll make it much easier to spot the good from the not-so-good stuff when you’re choosing the best bar for your running workout. Natural vs. synthetic energy bars for runners A lot of these products also contain milk or eggs, which for me, as a vegan, is a good reason to avoid them, though there are certainly a lot more plant-based options nowadays. Most health organisations in the UK worth their salt, so to speak, recommend that you don't exceed 2.5g, or 2,500mg, of sodium each day. The Pronto's 37mg offering is, then, pretty minuscule when compared to Veloforte's own electrolyte powder which provides 350mg per serving. Taste
