About this deal

Josie's brother was killed 26 years ago by Samuel Barlow who was imprisoned for his murder - Now he's been released and Josie's daughter Ivy is missing. Is it a coincidence or has he taken/killed her. Also, the truth about Josie wasn’t very effective. I was hoping for a fresh and a very well-crafted revelation but everything dragged until the end. Ugh. Too bad. I’m still a fan, though. If I didn’t like K.L. enough, I would’ve dropped this. I have liked many of K L Slater’s books, as they are well-written and smooth reads. This one follows the pattern – has a decent story and keeps you guessing. Sixteen years ago, Rose made a mistake when she fell in love with a man who was bad news. Things started to happen to her friends and family and when her 8-year-old brother went missing, he was found smothered to death. Rose had always felt guilty about his death and years later she is still coming to terms with the past when she discovers new evidence that may reopen the case. Doubt over her boyfriends conviction is uncovered leaving Rose unsure of the truth.

The Narrator: An absolutely addictive and unputdownable

This was the first KL Slater book I’ve read in some time. And for the most part I was mostly engaged through it felt a bit too long. Maybe too detailed-oriented for this type of book? K.L. Slater is becoming one of my favorite authors. This was my second book by her and it did not disappoint! It was fast-paced and kept me guessing all the way through! Bestselling author Philippa Roberts has disappeared on the biggest night of her career! Where is she? Now I’m no big believer in coincidences…and neither is Josie. So when her daughter goes missing shortly after Samuels release…well I think we all know who to point the finger at. Don’t we? But Rose has found something .... and what she found will change her entire life and everything she ever believed. On top of this, more bad news. Her dad disappeared, and they found him at a bottom of a river. Her successful husband, Hugo, was having an affair with Sasyik (her colleague and friend) and is now pregnant and living in a beautiful countryside estate. Samuel's Mother wants to help, but she lied in the past to protect her child. Can she be trusted now? Well, I’m not sure if the author was under pressure to meet a deadline, but this book did not work for me. I wondered if Gareth was part of the reason that Billy went missing, then there was terrible thing that happened to her friend Cassie.

The Girlfriend: An utterly unputdownable psychological

Rose’s story is told through the past and present and we learn of “The Mistake” she made and the guilt she carries. We could feel the weight of guilt and the loss that she carried allowing us to question “The Mistake” for ourselves. We recommend this with caution as some readers could find it upsetting. There is nothing bad to say about this novel- creative, addictive writing, suspense-fueled plot, passionate and honest characters (both good and evil alike). Surprises at every turn will leave the reader constantly wondering what’s going to happen next. “The Mistake” has it all- young, teenage romance and the passion that could go horribly wrong, the murder of a young boy and the mystery that shrouds the sadness, and the quest of an older sister to bring the killer to justice. When Rose is only 18 she meets such a man. A very charming older man Gareth, who begins sweeping her off her feet. Ignoring her inner voice and friends warnings, she is soon in over her head, unable to break free. Sixteen years on, Rose still blames herself for Billy’s death. How could she have failed to protect her little brother?

Rose learns the hard way that he is not to be trusted, but its taken her some time and some loses along the way, including her best friendship with Cassie.Yet another fabulous title to add to my Bookouture beauties! I have recently come to associate Bookouture with a love of books and probably the most consistent crime thriller collection out there today. That is why each time I get to read an ARC of one of their killer thrillers, I just can't say no! Clear the calendar.... Here comes K.L. Slater's new title, THE MISTAKE! Rose thought she knew the truth about what happened to Billy. She thought she knew her neighbour. Now the only thing she knows is that she is in danger… This book is an examination of 'who can you trust?' It's about mothers trying to protect their children and about the truth. Like all books with a mystery, I did my own super sleuthing and came up with a list of subjects. I guessed two of the plot twists early on, but I still found this book to be enjoyable. Confession, Samuel was my favorite character. I feel he was the most developed and richly drawn character. He is devious, manipulative, and cruel, yet he is also a little sympathetic. He is the most complicated character in this book, and I love complicated characters. He's unlikeable yet, has suffered emotional pain in his life which has fueled his anger and actions.
