The Ceratosaurus, a carnivorous dinosaur, was in close proximity to the river bank where humans were present. However, due to the strong scent of fecal matter in the vicinity, the Ceratosaurus was deterred from pursuing its hunting instincts. The unpleasant odor emanating from the excrement acted as a deterrent for the dinosaur, causing it to abandon its intention to hunt for prey. Ceratosaurus was successfully recreated by InGen in the Embryonics Administration lab on Isla Sorna in secret after the acquisition of InGen by Masrani Global Corporation and after the passing of the Gene Guard Act, alongside Corythosaurus, Spinosaurus, and Ankylosaurus. [2] [3] The only known Ceratosaurus was parented and fed in captivity until InGen abandoned the lab and released it into the wild. Ceratosaurus was named in 1884 by the eminent American paleontologist Othniel Charles Marsh of Yale University. Marsh based his description on an almost complete skeleton from Colorado. In reference to its most distinctive feature, Marsh named it Ceratosaurus, meaning ‘horned lizard’, and gave it the species name C. nasicornis, meaning ‘ornamental nose’. The movie featured a diverse assortment of dinosaurs with arguably the best color schemes in the franchise. Gone were the dull grays and browns of the first two films, JP3 went wild like a kid with a coloring book and the movie was better for it, though not by much. One of the dinosaurs featured, for all of 20 seconds, was the Ceratosaurus. Although its screentime was brief its distinct colors and patterns are now canon, and featured in all Jurassic merchandise, from the Jurassic World: Evolution video game to Mattel’s line of toys. Because of its striking appearance the recently released Hammond Collection Ceratosaurus was my most anticipated toy in the Hammond Collection line. Yes, even more so than the Tyrannosaurus.

When CollectA announced its line of deluxe figures for 2018, the Ceratosaurus jumped out as a must-buy for me for a variety of reasons, not the least of which being that it is a dinosaur species I am very fond of. This is partly because, despite being a large theropod from the Jurassic era, it often gets eclipsed by other dinosaurs, notably the more popular Allosaurus, and a figurine with an emphasis on realistic detailing was hard to pass up. So how does the 2018 Collecta Ceratosaurus hold up? Although I expressed fondness over JP3’s Ceratosaurus design it was more the color scheme I was taken with than the dinosaur’s physical appearance, which to be frank was not terribly good. This toy is more reminiscent of the Jurassic Park: Evolution Ceratosaurus, with a longer, narrower snout, and a less ghoulish appearance than we see on the JP3 Ceratosaurus. Ceratosaurus has exhibited predatory behavior by targeting campers and juvenile individuals as potential prey. Similar to typical predators, Ceratosaurus engages in pursuits, actively chasing its prey and continuing the search even after losing sight of them. This behavior aligns with the natural instincts and hunting strategies commonly seen in predatory species. Yasmina had a trauma-induced nightmare in which a Ceratosaurus, the Indominus rex, Toro, and the Scorpios rex surrounded and killed her.

The Ceratosaurus from Schleich DINOSAURS has three prominent bumps on its head. Blade-shaped teeth line its movable jaw. The Hammond Collection Ceratosaurus measures about 13.5” long and stands roughly 5” tall at the hips. The actual Ceratosaurus is estimated to have measured about 20’ in length, give or take, which would put this toy at 1/17 in scale. That’s pretty darn close in scale to the 1/18 humans. But wait! The Ceratosaurus in JP3 is said to have been 30.5’ in length and scaled down from that size this toy is now 1/27 in scale. Personally, I’m happy that is scales better with the actual animal than the JP3 version but obviously that’s not ideal for most Jurassic Park collectors. Being created illegally and against the knowledge of InGen or Masrani higher ups, it is unknown if the Ceratosaurus and the other new dinosaurs were affected by or were even bred to include the lysine deficiency that affected the original dinosaurs. It is also unknown how many Ceratosaurus lived on the island, but the one known specimen was known to live in the northern portion of the island.
