About this deal

This work has been developed and supported by the Scottish Government’s Festivals Expo Fund and Imaginate’s Accelerator programme. Accelerator is supported by the PLACE programme, funded by the Scottish Government (through Creative Scotland), the City of Edinburgh Council and the Edinburgh Festivals.

A month after losing her big brother to suicide, Laura’s parents buy her a pet tiger. They never explain the tiger and never discuss Laura’s big brother. Not ever. It’s like Laura’s big brother didn’t exist. And having a pet tiger is illegal for a reason. Soon things start to spiral out of control... as things tend to do with feelings of grief... and tigers... There will be a creative writing workshop and resources available to support pupils and teachers on the themes raised in this show. This play is inspired by two facts: that there are now more tigers living as pets in the west than in the wild; and that the biggest killer of men under 50 in the UK is suicide.I do think that Earl went too far in predicting Tiger’s impact off the golf course. Sure, he became an international superstar, but I don’t think he had quite the impact as a global healer that Earl predicted. Nobody reasonably could. I doubt Nike regrets promoting that side of Earl’s vision, though, because Tiger’s identity truly was a powerful part of his story, especially in that moment. Mouse is convinced she/he is a tiger. Everyone else is not so sure but mouse is! She knows exactly who everyone is...even tiger...and she can do all things tigers can... For picture books featuring tigers, look no further than Timothy Knapman and Laura Hughes’ Goodnight Tigerin which a little girl tries her hardest to get a herd of jungle animals to sleep; in Tiger in a Tutuby Fabi Santiago, Max the tiger desperately wants to be a ballerina – but can he do it? In Lizzy Stewart’s There’s A Tiger in the GardenNora comes face t face with a friendly tiger in Grandma’s garden, and, of course, we can’t forget Judith Kerr’s classic The Tiger That Came to Tea, in which a tiger turns up unannounced one day and eats all the food in the house.

Freelance journalist and theatre critic, Thom Dibdin who presented the award at the CATS Awards ceremony said: “I Am Tiger is an immense and important play that dares to speak frankly about a big issue - the suicide of an older sibling.” Oliver Emanuel was selected for Accelerator in June 2019 and offered funding to research and develop a new piece of writing for young audiences: I Am Tiger. I Am Tiger The bold little mouse declares "I am a tiger" and manages to convince a raccoon, a fox, a snake and a bird not only that this is true, but that theyare not what they think they are. When a real tiger turns up, can the persuasive and fearless little rodent manage to persuade the tiger that heis the mouse? With the uncommon courage and confidence, people born in the Year of the Tiger are natural leaders and they can always bravely put brilliant ideas into practice. They are also generous, passionate and holding a strong sense of justice. When meeting the weak or see anything unfair, the Tigers stand up and offer help. That sort of thing makes sense for Tiger being tough on the golf course, sure. Good parenting. But what we don’t hear as much about is the detailed eye with which he prepared Tiger for everything that would come off the course, which included becoming the most famous athlete in the world. That’s remarkable.

But what will Mouse say when an actual tiger appears? Mouse has an excellent answer: Tiger is not a tiger; Tiger is a mouse! Twitchy nose, little hands and feet, cheese for breakfast: yup, definitely a mouse. And Mouse has some interesting descriptions for the other animals too…

Working with psychologists, mental health experts as well as zoologists and specialists in animal behaviour, my aim isn’t to make a piece of theatre that is preachy or issue-lead but a genuine, inspiring work of art that can be toured to schools as well as theatres. A week after losing her big brother to suicide, Laura’s parents buy her a pet tiger. They never explain the tiger and never discuss Laura’s big brother. Not ever. It’s like Laura’s big brother didn’t exist. And having a pet tiger is illegal for a reason. Soon things start to spiral out of control… as things tend to do with feelings of grief… and tigers… Tigers present different personalities and character traits according to various elements. In Chinese culture, all the things are composed of the Five Elements including Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. See the following chart to find your type. Tigers are such persons who dare to love and hate. If a friend does something wrong, they may point it out directly. The daring also makes them rebellious, stubborn and arbitrary in life, and thus it is not easy for them to take others’ advice. A tiny mouse declares that he is a tiger, resisting all of the other animals' efforts to convince him otherwise. When a real tiger shows up, the mouse is not dismayed, still insisting on his own tigrine identity, and declaring that the tiger is actually a mouse. Then, coming to a local pond (or river?), the mouse decides he is a crocodile instead... It tells the story of Laura, who is given a pet tiger by her parents a month after losing her big brother to suicide. They never explain the tiger and never discuss Laura’s big brother. Not ever. It’s like Laura’s big brother didn’t exist. And having a pet tiger is illegal for a reason. Soon things start to spiral out of control, as things tend to do with feelings of grief… and tigers…

Lu Kemp, Artistic Director of Perth Theatre and playwright Oliver Emanuel, talk about the show in the interview below. What do we make of all of this? I’ve brought in a renowned expert — aka my buddy Taylor — to break it down. Taylor and I grew up playing a lot of golf together and he now works at St. Andrews School in Delaware, where he has taught a sports journalism class and consumed an unhealthy amount of golf-related content. He insisted that I tell you in advance that he’s hardly an expert, but maybe that’s the point. Plus, I get to make the rules! Here we go:
