About this deal

This part of the adventure is by now one of the most emotionally pain-wrecked pieces of the novels and it gets even worse when we discover how and why he's unable to find her. I doubt the Fool had the time for detailed correspondence while being tortured, so who is she working for? I waited even longer to begin Fool's Quest, mainly because I struggled so with the pace of Fool's Assassin. I mean I have read this and much more in last 7 books featuring Fitz as the protagonist and yet it never gets old.

I can’t believe they STILL haven’t figured out that Bee is the Unexpected Son 🙄 How can nobody here put two and two together? While they had been gone, Ash had given the Fool dragon blood which put him on the path to heating and turned his eyes gold. What I really enjoyed was seeing Fitz taking action and doing things to help himself and those who need him. To me, this felt like Robin Hobb had simply forgotten about one of the best, most heart-wrenching scenes she’d ever written, and I hated it! I sobbed like nobody’s business over that ending, and honestly still haven’t recovered over a year after reading it!

To avoid any confusion: This was written right after I finished Fool’s Quest, but before I started Assassin’s Fate – you’ll get my thoughts on the whole series soon, don’t worry! This is not to say there is a problem from the readers perspective simply that Fitz is a flawed character. I worried once whether I'd be opening these new novels only to find a beloved series lessened after so long without a new entry but to the contrary the first two books of this trilogy have only stepped it up a notch. Actually, scratch that – at least there is one person in this family who has their priorities straight and is genuinely happy about their relatives’ good fortune! And when he finally decides to sacrifice his life on a Fool's quest, he even leaves the Fool behind, fully intending to go at it alone.

But this book certainly had the best usage of traditional fantasy elements out of any of the Farseer books due to how important these aspects were for the story that was being told. After all, why would Robin Hobb have introduced her if she’s not gonna go through even more painful character development? I appreciate the gesture of Chade giving Fitz this proclamation of Verity’s now, BUT WHY NOT SOONER? With it being the second book of a trilogy, and how the first book ended, I can't say I'm very surprised. Realizing some sort of skill spell has been placed on them, Chade and Fitz revive the staff's memory with elfbark tea.Unless otherwise stated, featured cover images are from Goodreads and graphics were made with Canva.

Robin Hobb weaves a tale so heart-breaking and intricate that you cannot help but turn the page to see what happens. If the final book sticks the landing, which I fully expect it will, this series will likely go down as the best series within this world. And though there is tragedy along the way, I think we can trust Robin Hobb to do the right thing by us, but more importantly, by her characters. In fact, one of my few regrets (although I completely understand, because these books can only be so long and she's just not part of the plot that much) is that we get to see so little of her. The range of emotions that these characters go through feels so incredibly real, and I struggle to imagine how anyone will ever top what Robin Hobb has achieved here. This book story continues the story from the first book with the Fool hurt and dying and Fitz tries to save him, but it seems futile, but you should never say never and solutions can show up where you least expect them. Two characters are kidnapped, and the two title characters go into emotional tizzies about how to get them back and/or avenge them.

The journey that you get to take with Fitz, following him from a little boy into a grown man - and the cast of characters that surrounds him, is remarkably perfect. While I still think Fool's Assassin is my favorite installment in this trilogy so far, Fool's Quest was a complex, multilayered journey that I really appreciated and that successfully set the stage for everything that is to come in the final book in the series. I don't want to ruin a single thing about this book for those who are reading this without reading this book first, but what has previously been a disappointment for me in these books is definitely not the case here. Of course Fitz would tell the Fool he merely cleaned out his wounds and bandaged them, when in reality, he ended up taking the Fool’s wounds onto himself while trying to heal his friend! At the start we have two very diverging stories that will wring wildly different emotions from the reader.I've nothing to add to my original review, but I feel like until I have Assassin's Fate in my hands, I'll be trapped in a Skill-pillar.
