About this deal

Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised is validated by DfE (June 2021) and is included on their list of approved SSP programmes. It comprises of classroom resources to support the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised SSP and a range of phonic readers that together provide a consistent and highly effective approach to teaching phonics. Reading Books for Little Wandle Discover an exciting mix of stories and non-fiction that are matched perfectly to the Little Wandle progression and support all the Letters and Sounds phases. My DS is currently reading at the hardest end of Phase 2 (summer born reception) which probably equates to the easier end of red books using the list someone linked earlier. Children with special educational needs follow the Little Wandle Phonics programme as outlined above.

The 48 Big Cat books follow the Little Wandle SSP progression to enable teachers to match books to phonics learning each week and allow children to practice the sounds they have been introduced to. New publishing for September 2022 includes blending practice and stretch and challenge books and in total there are 204 decodable books with an additional 50 books suitable for pupils aged 7+. Calendar arrived safely in plastic-free packaging - which I've not seen before with a calendar, so kudos for that.

By the end of the Autumn Term, we aim for all children to be able to blend to read words with Phase 2 sounds. I’d agree with Biff, Chip and Kipper era books just being less words, some of the words in even the easiest bands of these books aren’t easy at all! These children urgently need to catch up, so the gap between themselves and their peers does not widen. The Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised programme is designed to ensure that no child is left behind and where teachers think that this may be the case, children will be supported with Little Wandle’s daily keep up or catch up in Reception and Year 1, or Rapid Catch up in Year 2 and Key Stage 2.

There are also some useful videos so you can see how they are taught at school and feel confident about supporting their reading at home. Introduction and engagement - The teacher will explain to the children what they will be learning today and get them enthusiastic and motivated for the session. As far as I can see, the 7+ books look to just be the same phases but aimed at older kids (ie more age appropriate content for kids with a lower reading age than their age).

Each reading practice session has a clear focus, so that the demands of the session do not overload the children’s working memory. Every teacher in our school has been trained to teach reading, so we have the same expectations of progress. Older children can exit the Rapid Catch-up programme when they read the final fluency assessment at 90+ words per minute. The resources on this page will help you support your child with saying their sounds and writing their letters.

Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised is now validated by DfE (June 2021) and is included on their list of approved SSP programmes. At WGPS we believe reading is essential for academic success but, more importantly, we value reading as a key life skill, and are dedicated to enabling our pupils to become lifelong readers.

You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. This is a much faster paced and age appropriate version of the Little Wandle scheme which enables children to access age appropriate reading and therefore the full curriculum much more rapidly, and also prepares them for the KS3 curriculum when they move onto secondary school. We use the Rapid Catch-up assessments to identify the gaps in their phonic knowledge and teach to these using the Rapid Catch-up resources – at pace.I know they all develop differently etc etc but just keen to have a broad idea if DD is where she should be for her age. identify/ explain key aspects of fiction and non-fiction, such as characters, events, titles and information.
