About this deal

The most popular English translations of the Catholic Bible today are the New American Bible, the New Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition, and the New Jerusalem Bible. Aside from the inclusion of the Apocrypha, each of these Bible translations is reasonably good and accurate in how it renders the biblical text into English.

There are also several allusions to the deuterocanonical books in the epistle to the Hebrews. They are not directly quoted, but the allusions show that they were part of the awareness of the Jews of that day. Hebrews 11:35 may reference 2 Maccabees 7:29. Hebrews 11:5's comments on Enoch seem derived from Sirach 44:16. The mention doesn't prove the books are divinely inspired, but points to their awareness within Jewish culture. It includes the deuterocanonical books. These are texts in the Old Testament where there is an ancient Greek Jewish source but not a Hebrew one. These include Tobit, Wisdom, Sirach and Baruch. They have always been accepted by the Catholic Church as part of the Canon of Scripture. Since the beginning of 2020, the Department of Christian Life and Worship of the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales has been preparing the text of the new Lectionary using the English Standard Version: Catholic Edition, together with the Abbey Psalms and Canticles. Martin Luther rejected the deuterocanonical books because they were written after God stopped speaking to the Prophets. He called them "Apocrypha, that are books which are not considered equal to the Holy Scriptures, but are useful and good to read." Luther believed these books were valuable but not essential to the Christian faith. It was of him that I said, "Behind me comes one who has passed ahead of me because he existed before me."Ten years later, Catholic Book Publishing acquired Regina Press, a long-established and respected publisher of devotional and children’s gift titles. This acquisition added over 100 titles to Catholic Book’s offerings and provided a wealth of meaningful resources to an already bountiful collection of trusted titles. The Bishops of England and Wales agreed in November 2018 that this text should be the basis for the new edition of the Lectionary to be used in their territory. May 2003 signaled further expansion by Catholic Book Publishing when the company proudly welcomed the World Catholic Press imprint to the Catholic Book family. World Catholic Press, a mainstay in the publication of Catholic Bibles and Bible-related materials for nearly three-quarters of a century at the time of the acquisition, offers a wide range of Bibles that serves to expand and complement Catholic Book’s own rich tradition of Bible publishing, including Family Editions, Student Editions, and Gift and Award Editions. a b c d Arinze, Francis; Ranjith, Malcolm. But to those who did accept him he gave power to become children of God, to those who believed in his name The apocryphal books were never considered inspired by the Jewish people, to whom God entrusted His Old Covenant oracles (Romans 3:1-2) The 7 deuterocanonical books are indicated by an asterisk (*) and the 2 books with additional deuterocanonical material by a plus sign (+)But if any one receive not, as sacred and canonical, the said books entire with all their parts, as they have been used to be read in the Catholic Church, and as they are contained in the old Latin vulgate edition; and knowingly and deliberately contemn the traditions aforesaid; let him be anathema.” 2 Ibid So they asked, 'Then are you Elijah?' He replied, 'I am not.' 'Are you the Prophet?' He answered, 'No.' There are differences in the nomenclature of the books and most modern English translations call these 1 and 2 Esdras (see, for instance, Esdras#Naming conventions). When Jesus saw Nathanael coming he said of him, 'There, truly, is an Israelite in whom there is no deception.'
