John Burland, founder of the Wainwright Society, wrote and devised a dramatic presentation of his life and works which was presented at the Wildman Theatre at Ilkley Playhouse as part of the Ilkley Literature Festival on 15 October 2009.

Each walk is prefaced by its location in relation to Wainwright’s volume titles, a distance, ascent in metres and a list of felltops visited, along with their grid reference and height above sea level. Our Book Collection also includes copies of the following works which, whilst not written by Wainwright, have either Forewords, Introductions or drawings by him which have not been published in other works. He lived and worked in the town for the rest of his life, serving as Borough Treasurer from 1948 until he retired in 1967. Alfred Wainwright is probably best known for his Guidebooks but, when the total bibliography is inspected, his writing and, particularly his drawings are seen to be of at least equal importance. Wainwright was a lifelong Blackburn Rovers fan and a founder member of the Blackburn Rovers Supporters Club.

In 2014, it was agreed that the Society should however embark on a project to acquire a copy of every one of AW’s published items, the purpose of which was to try to ensure that a copy of his work was available for the future.
