About this deal

Join the Born Free team behind the scenes in this full-colour book series about amazing real-life animal rescues… In October, we launched ‘Saving Meru’s Giants’, our ambitious programme to protect elephants and giraffes of Meru, including the deployment of our de-snaring Twiga Team. I do recognise that the Born Free trilogy has its place in history, but reading it wasn't the best experience for me. It is about the author and her husband adopting three lion cubs after he accidentally kills their mother and releasing one, Elsa in the wild. I confess. I cried when she died. I cried again when the author saw her in her son Jespah. And finally - when they never saw the cubs again. On February 1st, 1956, George Adamson, the Indian-born Brit and Senior Wildlife Warden of the Northern Frontier District of Kenya’s wildlife department was engaged in an aggressive confrontation with a lioness. George, a wildlife conservationist, was forced to kill the lioness out of self-defence when she charged him. Unbeknownst to George, the lioness’ aggressive behaviour was due to the nearby presence of her three cubs.

We helped International Animal Rescue care for rescued ‘dancing’ sloth bears in India, by funding a vet clinic. Elsa's story started the wild animal rights to live wild and free and ends in a very real legacy left by both Elsa and the Adamson's. One of the lions in the film was played by a former mascot of the Scots Guards, who had to leave him behind when they left Kenya. [4]The UK’s last dolphinarium closed its doors due to the introduction of tighter new industry standards, following a campaign by Born Free. Fantastic story, Elsa absolutely captured my heart. However, I have a few issues with the writer's approach to conservation. Someone perhaps will pounce on this almost new book when they discover it in a charity shop, and feel as happy as I did that all three books are here in an accessible format. But it's no longer for me. I also received the DVDs as a gift, took off the cellophane, but could not get past the opening credits. Those are set to pass on too. First edition. 8vo; original pictorial boards; pictorial dustwrapper (housed in removable protector); pp. 160; colour frontis; plates. Dustwrapper slightly rubbed, with some edge tears, and earlier owner's tape repairs; small patch of deletion fluid over name on front free endpaper. Good condition. "This book records the extraordinary relationship with a Kenya lioness established by the author over a period of four years, and still existing. There have been many, too many, 'pet lions' but none has ever before been returned to a wild life and still maintained its relationship with human beings. . Perhaps never before over a similar period has the life history of an animal been documented in greater detail by hundreds of photographs, over one hundred of which form the illustrations of this book.". Our Elephant-Free London campaign helped bring the 172-year history of keeping elephants in London Zoo to an end.

Later on, Elsa has three cubs. They are not nearly as tame or accepting towards humans as their mother, and they constantly struggle between imitating her actions and following their instincts. I saw the movie Born Free as a child and loved it. I probably read the book along the way too but as usual don't remember. The story of Elsa and the Adamsons is still an amazing one of Born Free received critical acclaim. Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reports that 88% of 17 film critics have given the film a positive review, with a rating average of 7.1 out of 10. [5] Born Free Kenya successfully lobbied to prevent 300 wild animals – lions, leopards, giraffe and more – from being exported to a life in captivity in Chiang Mai Night Safari Park in Thailand. I cannot remember how many times I reread this book; it was many. I also enjoyed Living Free and Forever Free although not quite as much, but it would have been impossible for me to not read those sequels as I would have been painfully curious about how the story continues.Amnesty International UK 2019. I appreciate this was wrote in the late 50's, so alot of the language is not necessarily PC and at times felt a bit uncomfortable. I also understand this was about trying to introduce a lioness to the wild, but there was alot of "we saw a cobra, george shot it", "there was a fly, we shot it", with some of the animal killings feeling pointless.

Ray, Rachel (7 January 2011). "Elsa's Legacy: The Born Free Story, Nature on PBS – US TV review". The Daily Telegraph . Retrieved 18 December 2012. Abbie loved reading this book , she gained excellent knowledge and facts, some parts regarding the cruelty Abbie said she wished she could help, very... Long before Hemingway, Dinesen, and Markham shared their Africa with me, I knew Elsa's Africa. This was a memoir I read in my youth, perhaps the first, and it remains with me to this day. There was THIS Elsa. An orphaned lion cub, the weakest of the litter that grew up into a beautiful lioness named Elsa, who got involved in many adventures with her foster parents.

Sadly, Joy and her husband are unable to return Elsa to the wild completely despite their attempts and she remains “domesticated” to a large extent. A lion who is friendly to humans does not seem to have much of a future in the wild. Elsa also appears to be highly dependent on the couple for her meals most of the time. Born Free USA launched an ongoing project to rescue monkeys from laboratories and give them lifetime care in their spacious Texas Primate Sanctuary. When I started reading this book, I honestly thought I will like it a lot more. Yes, it must be a real adventure to adopt a lion cub and raise it. I would imagine that to some extend it resembles raising a kitten - you spend as much time as possible with the animal, you provide the food and water, you play with it, you try (usually unsuccessfully) to teach it some manners, and so on. The bond between Elsa and Joy is amazing. I loved how clearly the lions' personalities were shown throughout the book. Their antics thoroughly amused me, and their harships made me sad.
