About this deal

In the eleventh century, the virgin king emerged as a significant figure; Edward the Confessor, the English king whose death without issue in 1066 led to the Norman Conquest, is probably the best known.

Harvey's specialism in the history of medicine provides particular depth, and is integrated with legal and cultural material to create a sparkling and convincing whole. There were some moments, like referring to Harvey Weinstein as Harry, that held it back from 5 star. The Fires of Lust is the most comprehensive picture of medieval sex to date, one that not only illuminates striking differences between sex then and sex now, but also dispels long-held misconceptions about life in the period. The book is sad and unintentionally funny, sometimes verging on the horrific, and vastly informative. I feel like I learned something from it, particularly regarding misconceptions of how people in this time period viewed sex and relationships, and I was entertained whilst reading it.

The story of Simon the goat-lover is just one of hundreds of weird and wonderful anecdotes that rub together in Katherine Harvey’s jaunty study of late-medieval sex .With unabashed directness, a delicate touch of wit, and constant humanity, Katherine Harvey surveys the world of medieval sex and sexuality . Harvey cites a German poem in which a stepmother advises her daughter on how to seduce a man: leave her bodice unlaced, thus “causing his courage to rise” (among other things! On display are men who were burnt to death for rape, men who received nothing more but a small fine for rape, women who got impregnated by demons who collected the wasted seed of masturbators, and everything weird and wonderful, normal and shocking you can think of in between (everything, that is, except for oral sex). By exploring their sex lives, the book brings ordinary medieval people to life and reveals details of their most personal thoughts and experiences.

Stain that surviving record with occasionally virulent misogyny and to what extent the complicated and contradictory picture that emerges reflects the real experiences of people has to be in doubt. an expansive, accessible and highly engaging account of what we do – and don't – know about western European sexual culture in the Middle Ages. There are passionate stories and horrible ones but the infatuation with the Middle Ages as a period so far and almost subhuman compared to our own allows us the pleasure of not recognizing our own flaws: something Harvey forces us to confront. Katherine Harvey does a good job at dismantling modern misconceptions and stereotypes, and has a real eye for vivid anecdotes, such as using surnames—Simon Fukkebotere, William Smallfuk, and Roger Fuckbythenavele to name but a few—to show how the English verb 'to fuck' shifted in meaning from 'to strike or beat' to its modern meaning by the fifteenth century. It's definitely written with classroom use in mind, but I'd also recommend it for anyone who wants to know more about the subject.Despite the prohibition on clerical marriage, many priests continued to have sexual relationships and even formed long-term partnerships. Some of it the content is bleak, of course; the chapters focusing on sex work and sexual violence, in particular, make for difficult reading. Some of the topics it discussed helped put history into context, another reason I think it would have been better placed earlier.

The French poet Eustache Deschamps (1346-1406) favored tight dresses with wide necklines that pushed the bosom and throat forward. Book Review: Jack Kerouac’s “Pic” — Last But Not Least In "On the Road," Jack Kerouac voiced a longing to be “. The Fires of Lust: Sex in the Middle Ages was published in October 2021 by Reaktion Books, and is distributed by University of Chicago Press in the US.Although Oda lived as a nun for many years after this incident, her hagiographer presented her as a martyr for virginity. Harvey provides evidence that priestly chastity was honored as much in the breach as the observance.
