About this deal

I lit the candle with a normal length match from a match book by sliding the glass down to get to the wick as designed. Also, unless your lantern is fully waterproof, you are only one puddle away from a lack of a light source. hour citronella candle that releases a pleasant citronella aroma to help keep mosquitoes and other bugs at bay, especially while camping near water sources.

In this modern age of rechargeable LED light sources, the thought of using a candle lamp seems like a big step backwards. In some cases, you should never use candles – such as after an earthquake and if there is a risk of gas main breakages. It is perfectly suited to backpacking, mountaineering, snow camping and similar outdoor pursuits and simple to maintain and operate. A wide range of lanterns are available from single tea-lights, collapsible versions, right up to, three large candle UCO varieties. You can adjust the wick length using a pair of pliers, but then you won’t get as long of a burn time. This can mean that on a weekend trip, you can never be sure of the amount of illumination time you have for certain weather conditions. Once lit, the chimney slides back up into its original position - providing wind protection for the candle flame. Other candles can melt down prematurely due to improper wax formula and can leave significantly more soot on the heat shield compared with UCO candles.

The plate on top of the UCO candle lantern allows you to heat up small amounts of food, or drinks to almost boiling temperature. They are highly portable, provide light and heat, and are useful for helping take condensation off the inside of a tent when camping. The UCO candle lantern is designed to be safe for use inside tents, offering a warm glowing light, reducing damp/condensation and acting as an insect repellent too (when using citronella candles). I did push up on the bottom (metal plate between candle and spring) to push the candle up after the 2 hours. You need to stick a wick in it (make sure it is made from cotton, not synthetics, as the synthetic will melt and not burn). Over all I dropped a star because they need to make the spring heavier to push the candle up as it burns. Candles can also produce heat, which might be life-saving if you don’t have an alternative heating option. They won’t suffer from leaking battery acids or fuels, and could sit happily for years in your car or home, before quickly coming to life with a match or lighter at your convenience.

This is not enough to replace a stove, but a welcome addition from reheating that coffee mug as the evening passes.I checked recent reviews and saw that several folks back in the spring reported getting the lantern without the extra candles. These candles are a natural alternative to oil based candles and produce a pleasant aroma with less smoke. These 15-hour candles are made from paraffin, which means they will have a slight chemical and smoky odor.

The candles are said to last for 9 hours, we can vouch for this as we did sleep one night with it still lit (not recommended) and when we awoke early the next morning it was still burning. It could even be your first grab-for item when there’s a power cut or when your planning your next weekend adventure. But again, a heavier spring would fix that problem, and the pushing the candle up as it burns problem. It brings fond memories of my camping trips to Dentdale in the Yorkshire Dales and Cumbria over 30 years ago.
