About this deal

This content is created, owned, and copyrighted by Brownicity and cannot be reproduced without permission. It also subtly unpacks the phenomenon of economic abuse -- by which the abuser controls the abused through the control and manipulation of finances -- which keeps many women trapped in cycles of violence that often pass down to their own children.

I was afraid that What Lies Between Us would be too derivative and in that regard, it is (which is why I’m withholding the fifth star). John Marrs molds this relationship, twists and weaves it into something that will positively leave you reeling!

When they are finished, Nina helps Maggie back to her room in the attic, and into the heavy chain that keeps her there. They say every house has its secrets, and the house that Maggie and Nina have shared for so long is no different.

To smile and engage with light conversation while underneath scheming with violent thoughts that will shock to the core.To say that its heartbreaking and disturbing , such a sad, sad story somehow doesn't seem adequate but it is definitively a beautifully written one that I won't forget about . The cover is an apt metaphor of the book, where water plays a significant role in multiple turning points in the novel and the image of a woman half-submerged, reminds me of that ability a person has of appearing to cope and be present on and above the surface, when beneath that calm exterior, below in the murky depths, unseen elements apply pressure, disturbing the tranquil image.

I would not like to go deep into the plot, however, I was unable to comprehend Maggie's attitude to everything NIna (the daughter) had done or did. You can see a woman gazing out of the attic window-but you cannot see the chains which keep Maggie a prisoner there. The story unfolds really well and is full of twists and as revelation piles on top of mountainous revelation you find yourself utterly incapable of putting the book down.It may be that I am somewhat innured to that sort of situation but it seemed that the only reaction against the captivity was physical violence, there didn't appear to be much emotional or mental reaction. It isn’t unusual to come upon a flash of silver and gold, a koi flapping on the wet grass, swept out of the pond by the onslaught of rain. But not to worry, because she has decided to share her story, which starts early on, when she is just a baby herself. The whole time I was reading, it felt like I was just waiting for a punch line on an old joke that I already know about.
