Continue by going to the right. The closer to the edge, the narrower and tighter the shadows should be. Step 9 The letter “H” in an H pencil stands for hard. It represents the hardest range of the graphite pencil. The more grades you use, the better you work them into each other and the less likely someone is to point out the joins, the better your image will be. Japanese manufacturer Tombow is known for its high-density pencils, meaning they sharpen easily and the point stays longer. The Mono pencil is known to run a bit dark and is virtually smudge-proof. The dark lines of the Tombow Mono can almost mimic inks, making it a favorite of artists who focus on linework and tracing. While an HB pencil is darker and softer than an H pencil, it is at the same time harder and lighter than a B pencil.

It depends on your style and objectives. If you are doing gesture-type sketches or contour-type drawings where outlines are most important, then an HB or lighter is the way you want to go. You will be able to maintain a nice sharp point for a longer period of time, and the outlines won't be easily smudged away.Continue where your 6B lines finished and, using a 5B pencil, continue the contour lines across the middle of the sphere. Bending the lines slightly will add definition to the sphere. H-grade pencils sharpen very nicely to an extremely fine point and retain that point for longer periods of time. They require less sharpening, which makes them great for detailed work that doesn't require dark values, but they have a slightly abrasive feel due to their higher clay content and work best on smooth paper with little texture. You can use the side of the graphite tip for subtle and high-value (light) shading techniques. The main difference between the mechanical pencil lead hardness scale and the wooden pencil lead grade scale is that fewer grades are available due to the thinness of the lead compared to a wooden pencil lead core.

And while we've gone over how to select the best colored pencils, there are a whole other set of considerations when thinking about the right graphite pencil to add to your collection. In fact, you'll probably—like most artists—wind up using several different pencils depending on the effect you're looking for. Finding the right paper to go with a given pencil lead grade is the key, and there is nowhere on the internet that discusses this. I stumbled upon an old dot matrix paper years ago, and if you use a 2B mechanical lead with it, it will astonish you. It is an absolute pleasure to write with it, and I’m sure draw as well, but I’m not an artist. So dark, smooth, easy to erase… it’s like you’re writing with a pen. I wouldn’t write a letter with it, but I take notes all day, and it’s perfect for that use. But my point is this: a standard 20 lb white paper using the 2B lead is too light for me. But write on paper with a subtly rougher texture to it, and then the paper pulls more lead off of the pencil. Mmwah! Reply Therefore, 9B which is the highest in the range, is the darkest as well as the softest graphite pencil. The "F" pencil is similar in mark to an "HB" pencil, only slightly lighter. Like an "HB" pencil, it is capable of producing darker and lighter marks, but without any extremes. The graphite material found in an "F" pencil is slightly harder than an "HB" pencilmeaning that it canstay sharpfor a longer period of use. For this reason, this pencil is designated as "fine" which is why this pencil is labeled with an "F". The Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Different Grades

Personally, I struggle to draw lightly with my H pencils. I don’t know what it is, but it’s one of my drawing weaknesses. The lead is also bonded with glue to the pencil’s protective outer wooden case to add strength and prevent breakages in a wooden pencil. The composition of H-grade pencil features more clay in the lead which makes it harder, lighter, and able to produce cleaner lines.

With 4H pencil lead, you are starting to get into graphite that is a little more suitable for drawing with. If you notice something you'd like to change, this is the time to do it. However, don't be tempted to add more contrast—the darker the shadows, the harder the clumps will look. Soft fur doesn't have so many clear shadows, because light easily gets through it. 3. How to Draw Short Fur Step 1 A 9H pencil has the hardest pencil lead that you will find in a graphite pencil. It’s known for being able to be sharpened to a fine point, then holding that point for a long time. 9H pencils are best used for fine detail work. If you are trying to put a lot of graphite down on paper with a 9H pencil, you are going to be fighting a losing battle. But, if you want to draw something with fine lines, then a 9H pencil is ideal since it creates light marks that are very difficult to smudge. It can be used for technical drawings, but it’s best to use is for preliminary work. 9H pencil lead is hard to see, and even if you use a lot of pressure, you aren’t going to succeed in producing a dark line. That’s why you should use it for preliminary work, then go over that work with a darker pencil. Because the lead is so thin, the lead is manufactured differently from that of wooden pencils, and there are fewer lead grades available. H pencils are harder, and B pencils are softer and darker. Understanding the differences in graphite pencil grades will give you the ability to use the right tools for the right job. One thing to keep in mind is that just because you start your drawing with one type of pencil doesn’t mean that the entire drawing has to be executed with that same type of pencil. In fact, you should always mix and match your pencils while you are working so that you can create a variety of effects on your drawing. You should use harder pencils for details and softer ones for blending in shadows and adding depth to your drawings.

You can make your sketches with an H pencil and then use a softer pencil to create darker marks or shades.

The lead core of a wooden pencil is approximately 2 mm in diameter. Mechanical pencils are usually much thinner, typically 0.3 mm to 0. 9 mm in diameter. Take the 4B pencil and draw some tight, dark shadows on the shadowed side. Don't make them too big! Step 12 A more recent development has been that of carbon pencils. Instead of using the allotrope of carbon, which is graphite, carbon itself is used which can achieve even darker results than graphite. It also doesn't have that annoying glare that you can get with graphite when heavily applied. Some manufacturers are combining graphite with carbon to achieve even darker-grade pencils all the way up to 14B.
