About this deal

Moore added, “Long requested by VMP listeners, this reissue of Gravediggaz’s 6 Feet Deep is a must-have for all hip-hop historians." One of the Best Yet is Gang Starr’s first album since 2003’s The Ownerz, and features the late Guru’s vocals, as well as guest appearances from artists including J. Cole and Jeru The Damaja. DJ Premiere and Guru formed Gang Starr in the late ’80s, releasing seven albums before before disbanding in 2006. VMP Hip-Hop Director Marcus J. Moore said of the record, “This album chronicles the beginning of one of rap’s most storied groups. Though Gang Starr’s future releases earned more critical acclaim, you can’t tell the full story of Guru and DJ Premier without shedding proper light on No More Mr. Nice Guy , a foundational mix of rhymes and beats that should be given its proper due.”

Releases

Gang Starr was an East Coast hip hop duo that consisted of the late MC Guru and DJ/producer DJ Premier. Their style combined elements of New York jazz and hip hop. In 1989, the group split and the only member willing to continue under the name Gang Starr was Guru. He soon got in touch with DJ Premier (then known as Waxmaster C) who sent him a beat tape which Guru liked. He invited DJ Premier to join Gang Starr and in that same year they released their first single "Words I Manifest" along with the album No More Mr. Nice Guy (1989).

Hip-hop icons Gang Starr are releasing a new album as 2XLP, on double vinyl, titled One Of The Best Yet, via Gang Starr Enterprises this December. After splitting in 1989, Guru continued under the name Gang Starr and teamed up with DJ Premier (then known as Waxmaster C). Together, they released their first single "Words I Manifest" along with the album No More Mr. Nice Guy in 1989. Their catalog includes highly respected albums such as Step in the Arena (1991), Daily Operation (1992), Hard to Earn (1994), and Moment of Truth (1998). Gang Starr was an influential East Coast Hip-Hop duo that consisted of MC Guru and DJ/producer DJ Premier and a former trio. The group was known mainly for their unique style, which combines elements of New York swing jazz and hip hop. The group was founded in Boston, MA in 1985 by Guru (then known as Keithy E. The Guru) and DJ 1,2 B-Down (also known as Mike Dee) with various producers, such as Donald D, J.V. Johnson or DJ Mark the 45 King helping out. In 1987 and 1988, Gang Starr released three 12" vinyl singles on the Wild Pitch label. In September, members of VMP Hip-Hop will receive The Documentary , the debut album from Jayceon Taylor, aka The Game — with beats and mentorship from his fellow Compton native and West Coast legend Dr. Dre. Our edition, pressed on exclusive 2LP Red vinyl, with lacquers cut by Barry Grint at Alchemy Mastering at AIR, also comes with new Listening Notes from Paul Thompson. Gang Starr was an East Coast hip hop duo consisting of the late MC Guru and DJ/producer DJ Premier. Their unique style combined elements of New York jazz and hip hop, helping to pioneer the New York hip hop sound. Founded in 1985 by Keith Elam (then known as Keithy E. The Guru) and DJ 1,2 B-Down (also known as Mike Dee), Gang Starr released several successful singles and albums throughout their career. The group was founded by Keith Elam in Boston, Massachusetts in 1985 (then known as Keithy E. It's impossible for a post-Guru (RIP) Gang Starr record to surpass the group's highest and best work (which for me is the "Moment of Truth" record). That said, for an old head raised during the Golden Age of Mid-'90s East Coast Hip-Hop, this album is the cure for what ails me when it comes to modern-day rap music.
