About this deal

Living in England for nearly 7 years gave me ample opportunity to sample a great many traditional British dishes, both sweet and savory. And believe me, I took advantage of those opportunities! But of all the dishes I enjoyed, for pure comfort food nothing will ever top English Sunday roast with Yorkshire Pudding, Bangers and Mash, and Toad in the Hole! What is Toad in the Hole? Gayler makes individual toad in the holes in a muffin tin. They look cute – and one of my testers argues passionately that they ensure a more equitable ratio of batter to sausage – but I find them soggy in the middle: there's just not enough room for both the batter and the sausage to live in peace. Extras Increase the oven temperature to 450 degrees F and bake for about 15-20 minutes or until the pudding has risen and is browned. There is another version of "Washers" in existence which is like a missing ancestor between the game

Also available is a rubber mat ochee to go with the table. The mat serves a double purpose - protecting the floor from toads that come off the table and providing the throwing line. The rear of the mat should be put level with the rear of the table. Make a well in the centre of your flour then tip the eggs in. Using a fork or a small whisk, whisk them into the flour. Remove from the oven and serve immediately with our delicious homemade onion gravy and your choice of vegetable.I’ve had a bit of trouble with toad in the hole over the years though, with lots of attempts with soggy batter that doesn’t rise well. This easy toad in the hole recipe from Mary Berry however seems to work for me – with a light batter that was both crisp and fluffy. Why is it called toad in the hole? Alfriston in the 1920's. Consequently, it seems likely that the game appeared in Southern England in Each game is worth ONE point to the winners – i.e. four points are available for the singles, two for the doubles, and one for the team game. The winner is the first player to score exactly 31 points, playing from 31 to 0. If a player scores more than 31, they are bust and there is no score for that turn. Getting the pan nice and hot, as almost everyone suggests, is essential for a crispy base – the fat (I like dripping or lard; Smith's groundnut oil is deliberately bland, and Gayler's olive oil all wrong here) should be smoking, and the batter must sizzle as it hits it. Grigson coats the base of the tin with a thin layer of batter and bakes for 10 minutes "to set" before adding the remainder, along with the sausages, but I don't find it makes much of a difference. Batter first, sausages immediately afterwards seems to work best: sausage first, a la Delia, means the toad has a leaky bottom.

holes. Sometimes the holes do not have specific scores and on other boards, each hole is ascribed a Redivivus". This translates as 'Bushel Game', a Bushel being an old measure of volume equivalent to It was at this time that families discovered that combining a batter-based dish with cheap, inexpensive cuts of meat, game (pigeons and other fowl), or offal (kidneys), as well as a hot, filling gravy made for cheap yet filling meals. This is how toad in the hole was thought to have come about.

The teams in 2nd and 3rd place will have a playoff match at a neutral venue, the winner of that match will be promoted

However, there is one English culinary treasure that takes the cake: and that is the toad in the hole.

Pitch Penny

The most commonly accepted explanation for its name is that the sausages resemble toads peeking from a crevice made of crisp batter. All incomplete matches should be reported to [email protected] for them to award the points appropriately. It is wrong for teams involved, if it proved impossible to finish the match, to decide the outcome, as this might distort the final League positions. This is a well-known fact in Yorkshire Pudding-land. But I repeat: DO NOT OPEN THE OVEN DOOR until at least 25 minutes into the cooking time. If you do, your batter will sink.

Regardless of the unclear and varied origins of its etymology, one thing is for certain: this homely yet filling classic has stood the test of time. I love an easy toad in the hole. It’s a perfect, simple midweek meal. Once you’ve made the batter you can just pop it in the oven and forget about until it’s ready so it’s great for a low effort, family meal. This account might make for a better story, particularly for the Northumbrians, but you might as well take it with a grain of salt, as there's no evidence that this incident actually happened. There would then be a toss of a coin (or similar fair method, a toss nearest the hole is often used), the winner to decide in which leg to go first. Players go first in alternate legs. The third leg need not be played if it is 2-0. If it is 1-1, another toss will be made for the final leg.
