About this deal

Surely draughts will only happen if there is a variable gap between the underside of the skirt and the new flooring, depending on how flat the floor you are laying on top on is. Cold air naturally circulates below ground floor floorboards, and the small gaps between boards in an average-sized room add up to the equivalent of a small window. It comes in 3 thickness options and allows for plenty of movement of the boards, while still maintaining the seal. Solid floors don’t really tend to have draught issues associated with them, but suspended timber floors are definitely worth tackling. Pine slivers are probably the pinnacle of draught-proofing techniques for floorboards, fitting in as flawlessly as possible with a very long life.

The first thing to assess when considering whether to draught-proof your floorboards is what the required finish is. As well as the vibrations of footfall, wooden boards will expand in heat and contract in cold and any filler you use on your floor needs to allow for this. Chimney - unused, now stuffed tight with two pillows in a bin bag, and there is no draught coming down there any more, so not that.

In my house I truly believe that the skirting was attached to the wall using wooden wall plugs as you describe before plastering. This will also stop dust and dirt blowing up under the skirtings, which is what stains your carpets black. early on in my former life before I got a conscience I'm afraid I too was a floorboard butcher but, when I got older and worked for myself and didn't have the same time pressures from an impatient boss, I took greater care when lifting boards. The ingenious design plugs gaps of varying widths between 1mm and 8mm and won’t drop out when the boards shrink in hot weather.I though this would be a good idea to stop draughts as it is non adhesive and reversible if need be. If you can’t afford pine slivers, but still want a longer-lasting and neater finish, a specialist product such as Stop Gap or Draughtex is the answer. We had gaps between our floorboards in a variety of sizes which made it a slightly trickier job, but it has been SO worth it. Small gaps between the floorboards soon add up to a large area, perhaps the same size as a medium window, which when left open, day and night you’re sure to feel the draught and certainly wasting energy.

But it’s still fairly quick and the results look good – the dark grey blends in with the shadows between floorboards. Front door - taped shut and out of use, with a draught excluder, plus velvet curtains drawn fully across, and the letterbox has a flap cover both sides. The DIY options were messy and time-consuming, and the commercial products used permanent adhesives or sealants. DraughtEx is the best material for draught proofing floorboards because its flexible properties allow it to compress and expand with the natural movement of the floorboard gap meaning it doesnt fall out over time. Fabric draught excluder - Usually long and chunky tubes placed in front of the door when you're settling down in a room.

Please note: StopGap is not suitable for tongue and groove boards due to the shape of the gaps in this type of flooring. Sounds simple but still many pit falls such as grit and dirt between the boards that either blunted the wheel or diverted it off onto the surface of the adjoining one. My concern though is that there would be cold air circulating behind the skirting (which is 220mm high - so a large area) around the whole room which I guess would not help in keeping the room warm. It can also be compressed into floor gaps much smaller than its original profile, enabling you to fill even the smallest of gaps in floorboards. With so many products on the market, it is important to select one that will provide you with the best outcome for your specific requirements. This is another popular DIY option, but the sealant can fall through floorboard gaps if you don’t plug them first.
